The Flakiness Sieve Set is used to determine the flakiness index of coarse aggregate particles in accordance with EN 933-3. The system separates aggregate particles according to their thickness using parallel bar openings. Liya Test offers 14 different aperture sizes from 2.5 mm to 50 mm, together with the LT-A0012/S complete set for aggregate, asphalt and concrete laboratories.

What Is a Flakiness Sieve Set?
The Flakiness Sieve Set is used to determine the particle shape of coarse aggregates by measuring their flakiness index. The test identifies particles with relatively small thickness compared with their other dimensions.
The aggregate sample is first separated into specified size fractions. Each fraction is then tested using the appropriate bar sieve opening.
Particles that pass through the parallel bars are classified as flaky particles for the relevant fraction.
Flakiness Index Determination
The test is based on the thickness of individual aggregate particles.
After preliminary sieving, the operator places each aggregate fraction onto the corresponding Flakiness Bar Sieve. Thin particles pass through the slot between the bars, while thicker particles remain above the sieve.
The mass of the material passing through the bar sieves is then determined and compared with the total dry mass of the test sample.
This procedure allows the laboratory to calculate the overall flakiness index.
14 Different Aperture Sizes
Liya Test offers 14 individual bar sieve sizes ranging from 2.5 mm to 50 mm.
Available aperture sizes are:
2.5, 3.15, 4, 5, 6.3, 8, 10, 12.5, 16, 20, 25, 31.5, 40 and 50 mm.
This wide range allows different aggregate fractions to be evaluated using the appropriate aperture.
The LT-A0012/S Complete Set combines all individual Flakiness Bar Sieves into one laboratory set.
Stainless Steel Bar Construction
Each sieve incorporates parallel stainless steel bars arranged to form the specified opening.
The bars are approximately 5 mm in diameter and are mounted inside a rigid metal frame.
The rigid construction helps maintain the geometry of the openings during repeated laboratory use.
The external metal structure is also protected with a powder-coated finish to support resistance against corrosion.
Aggregate Quality Control
Particle shape can influence the behaviour of aggregates during mixing, compaction and placement.
Flat particles may behave differently from more cubical particles and may also be more susceptible to breakage during handling or loading.
For this reason, flakiness index testing is widely used in:

EN 933-3 Standard
The Flakiness Sieve Set supports testing according to EN 933-3, which covers the determination of aggregate particle shape by means of the flakiness index.
The standard method evaluates specified aggregate size fractions separately before calculating the overall flakiness index.
Using the correct bar sieve aperture for each fraction is therefore an important part of the test procedure.

Users can select individual Flakiness Bar Sieves according to their laboratory requirements or choose the LT-A0012/S Complete Set.
Each individual sieve measures approximately 34 × 32 × 8 cm and weighs approximately 4 kg.
The complete set measures approximately 34 × 32 × 104 cm and weighs about 52 kg.
