    Description

    What Is a Rotational Viscometer?

The Rotational Viscometer measures the resistance of a liquid against the movement of a rotating spindle. As the spindle rotates inside the sample, the liquid produces mechanical resistance. The instrument converts this torque into a viscosity value.

Viscosity directly affects the processing and application behaviour of many materials. Therefore, laboratories use rotational viscometers for oils, chemicals, polymers and bituminous binders. ASTM D2196 covers rotational viscosity measurements for various non-Newtonian materials.

    Wide Viscosity Measuring Range

The instrument provides a broad measuring range from 10 to 2,000,000 cP (mPa·s). This allows laboratories to test both relatively low-viscosity and highly viscous materials with the same system.

Measurement accuracy of approximately ±1.0% supports routine quality control and research applications. The operator selects an appropriate spindle and rotational speed according to the characteristics of the sample.

Measurements at different speeds can also provide useful information about the behaviour of non-Newtonian materials.

    Integrated Temperature Monitoring

An immersion-type temperature sensor continuously monitors the sample during testing. The system provides temperature measurements from 0 to 100 °C.

Temperature is particularly important because viscosity can change significantly as a material heats or cools. For this reason, comparative measurements should be performed under consistent thermal conditions.

For bituminous binders, rotational viscosity helps laboratories evaluate handling, pumping, mixing and application characteristics.

    Automatic Measurement and Data Transfer

The integrated timer allows the instrument to operate independently for a user-defined measurement period. This helps laboratories apply consistent test durations to different specimens.

An RS232 communication interface allows measurement data to be transferred to a computer. Compatible software can display viscosity and temperature profiles in graphical and tabular formats. An optional printer can also be connected for direct result output.

    Stable and Accurate Installation

The instrument includes adjustable feet and an integrated spirit level. These features help keep the measuring spindle correctly aligned with the sample.

Proper alignment is important for repeatable measurements. The adjustable structure also makes it easier to work with different laboratory containers and sample heights.

    Bitumen and Binder Viscosity Testing

The Rotational Viscometer supports laboratory procedures according to ASTM D4402/D4402M, EN 13302 and AASHTO T316 for bituminous binders. ASTM D4402/D4402M focuses on the apparent viscosity of asphalt binders at elevated temperatures, while EN 13302 covers dynamic viscosity measurement using a rotating spindle device.

Overall, the LT-AS1000 Rotational Viscometer combines a wide measuring range, temperature monitoring and digital data management. Therefore, laboratories can evaluate the viscosity of different liquids accurately and repeatably.
