Los Angeles Abrasion Tester is designed to determine the resistance of coarse aggregates to abrasion, impact and fragmentation. The aggregate sample is rotated inside a steel drum together with the appropriate abrasive ball charge. The drum operates at 31–33 r.p.m., while an automatic revolution counter stops the machine after the preset number of revolutions. Standard and safety cabinet versions are available for different laboratory requirements.

What Is a Los Angeles Abrasion Tester?
The Los Angeles Abrasion Tester is designed to determine the resistance of coarse aggregates to abrasion, impact and fragmentation. During the test, the aggregate sample and a specified abrasive ball charge are placed inside a rotating steel drum.
As the drum rotates, the aggregate particles are repeatedly lifted, dropped and impacted by the steel balls. This controlled mechanical action simulates degradation that may occur during handling, construction and service.
The result allows laboratories to compare the relative mechanical quality of different coarse aggregate sources.
Controlled Drum and Rotation System
The machine operates at a controlled speed of 31–33 r.p.m. The drum has an internal diameter of 711 ±5 mm and an internal length of 508 ±5 mm.
An automatic revolution counter monitors the test. The operator enters the required number of revolutions before starting the machine. When the selected value is reached, the motor stops automatically.
This system helps laboratories maintain repeatable test conditions and reduces the need for continuous operator monitoring.
Standard and Safety Cabinet Models
Liya Test offers two main versions. LT-A0060 is the standard Los Angeles Abrasion Test Machine.
LT-A0061 includes a protective safety cabinet. The safety system automatically stops the machine when the cabinet door is opened. A position-locking mechanism also allows the drum opening to be fixed securely during loading and unloading.
Abrasive Ball Set Options
The abrasive charge depends on the applied standard and aggregate grading.
For ASTM, UNI and CNR applications, LT-A0062 contains 12 abrasive balls. The LT-A0063 EN Ball Set contains 11 balls.
Correct ball selection is important because the total abrasive charge directly affects the mechanical action applied to the aggregate during the test.
How Is the Los Angeles Test Performed?
First, the operator prepares the coarse aggregate sample according to the relevant grading requirements. The sample and specified steel ball charge are then placed inside the drum.
The cover is secured and the required number of revolutions is entered. After the test, the material is removed, sieved and weighed.
The percentage mass loss represents the aggregate’s resistance to degradation. Lower loss generally indicates stronger resistance under the specified test conditions.
EN 1097-2 and ASTM Test Methods
EN 1097-2:2020 defines the Los Angeles test as the reference method for determining the resistance of coarse aggregates to fragmentation. BSI currently lists this edition as current and under review.
ASTM C131/C131M-20 covers smaller coarse aggregate sizes and is currently active. ASTM C535-16(2024) covers large-size coarse aggregates and is also active.
As a result, the Los Angeles Abrasion Tester provides aggregate laboratories with a durable and repeatable system for mechanical resistance testing.
