    TECHNICAL DOCUMENT

    Description

What Is a Soil Consolidation Test Set?

The Soil Consolidation Test Set determines the compression and deformation characteristics of soil under incremental vertical loading. The test is commonly performed on fine-grained soils where settlement develops progressively as pore water drains from the specimen.

During testing, a cylindrical soil specimen is confined laterally inside a rigid consolidation ring. Vertical loads are then applied in controlled increments while drainage takes place through the upper and lower porous stones.

The resulting deformation data help geotechnical laboratories evaluate settlement magnitude and consolidation behaviour. ASTM D2435/D2435M and ISO 17892-5 define widely used incremental-loading procedures for this type of testing.

    Ø50, Ø63.5 and Ø75 mm Consolidation Cells

Liya Test provides three main consolidation-cell configurations.

The LT-S0251 High Pressure Consolidation Test Set uses a Ø50 mm specimen and provides a total load of 64 kg.

The LT-S0252 ASTM Consolidation Test Set is designed for Ø63.5 mm specimens and also uses a total load of 64 kg.

The LT-S0253 BS/EN Consolidation Test Set accommodates Ø75 mm specimens and provides a total load of 80 kg.

    Mechanical Loading System

The standard consolidation configuration incorporates loading levers with 9:1, 10:1 and 11:1 ratios.

Different calibrated weight sets can be selected according to the required test configuration. Liya Test lists 16, 32, 50, 64 and 80 kg weight-set options.

A dedicated consolidation table can support up to three oedometer stations, allowing laboratories to perform several tests within the same working area.

    Digital Data Acquisition

Optional 4- or 8-channel static data acquisition units can record specimen displacement against time.

Analog or digital displacement gauges can be connected according to the laboratory configuration. The consolidation software allows users to define pressure increments and data-recording intervals.

Time-displacement curves can be evaluated using both square-root-of-time and logarithmic-time methods. The software also supports calculations including T90, T50, T100, mv and Cv. Test results and graphs can be transferred to Microsoft Excel for additional evaluation.

    Standards for Oedometer Testing

The current Liya Test page lists ASTM D2435, ASTM D3877, ASTM D4546, AASHTO T216, CEN ISO/TS 17892-5 and BS 1377-5.

For the new site, the current international reference should be written as ISO 17892-5:2017. ISO confirms that this edition remains current. ASTM also lists ASTM D2435/D2435M-25 as the active edition for one-dimensional consolidation testing using incremental loading.
