    PRODUCT DETAILS

The Semi-Automatic Digital Cone Penetrometer is designed to determine the liquid limit and penetration characteristics of fine-grained soils. The system measures the penetration of a specified cone into a prepared soil specimen during a controlled 5-second penetration period.

    • Liquid limit testing: Supports determination of the liquid limit of fine-grained soils using the fall-cone method.
    • 5-second penetration timer: Automatically controls the specified penetration period.
    • Digital penetration measurement: Provides 0.01 mm resolution for penetration readings.
    • Automatic reset: Simplifies repeated measurements during a test series.
    • 30° penetration cone: Standard cone option for liquid-limit testing.
    • 60° penetration cone: Available for alternative fall-cone testing applications.
    • Interchangeable cone gauges: Separate gauges are available for 30° and 60° cones.
    • Leveling system: Steel base and leveling screws help position the apparatus correctly.
    • Moisture tins: Ø55 × 35 mm and Ø75 × 45 mm options are available.
    • External dimensions: 260 × 240 × 600 mm.
    • Approximate weight: 10 kg.

    Description

    What Is a Cone Penetrometer?

The Cone Penetrometer is used to evaluate the consistency characteristics of fine-grained soils under controlled laboratory conditions. One of its primary applications is the determination of the liquid limit by the fall-cone method.

The liquid limit represents the moisture content at which a soil changes between the liquid and plastic states. It is one of the fundamental Atterberg limits used for soil classification and the evaluation of clayey and silty materials.

ISO 17892-12:2018 specifies methods for determining the liquid and plastic limits of soils and includes both the fall-cone method and the Casagrande method.

How Does the Cone Penetrometer Work?

The prepared soil specimen is placed inside a suitable sample container and its surface is levelled.

The penetration cone is then positioned above the specimen. When the test is initiated, the cone is released and allowed to penetrate the soil for a controlled 5-second period.

The resulting penetration depth is measured digitally. Tests are repeated at different moisture contents, allowing the relationship between water content and cone penetration to be evaluated.

This relationship can then be used to determine the liquid limit of the specimen.

    Digital 0.01 mm Penetration Measurement

The LT-S0030 incorporates a digital penetration indicator with 0.01 mm resolution.

The system also includes a release button, automatic reset and penetration timer. These functions help the operator perform repeated measurements under more consistent conditions.

A steel base and adjustable leveling screws support correct positioning of the instrument on the laboratory bench.

    30° and 60° Cone Options

The product family includes both 30° and 60° stainless steel penetration cones.

The 30° cone configuration is used for liquid-limit testing according to the applicable fall-cone procedure. Matching cone test gauges are available for setup and checking.

The 60° cone provides an additional configuration for fall-cone applications. However, the purpose of ISO 17892-6 must not be confused with the liquid-limit method in ISO 17892-12.

ISO 17892-6:2017 covers estimation of the undrained shear strength index of fine-grained soils using the fall-cone method.

    Moisture Content Tin Options

Two moisture-content tin sizes are listed for the system:

    • LT-G0152: Ø55 × 35 mm
    • LT-G0151: Ø75 × 45 mm

These containers support specimen preparation and moisture-content determination during laboratory testing.

    Compact Laboratory Design

The LT-S0030 Semi-Automatic Digital Cone Penetrometer has external dimensions of 260 × 240 × 600 mm and weighs approximately 10 kg.

Its compact structure makes it suitable for soil mechanics, geotechnical, university and quality-control laboratories performing routine Atterberg-limit and penetration tests.

Current Standards for Cone Penetrometer Testing

The existing Liya Test page currently shows:

    BS 1337:2, CEN ISO/TS 17892-6, 17892-12

    but all three need attention.

The current British reference is BS 1377-2:2022. BSI confirms that it replaced BS 1377-2:1990 in March 2022.

For liquid-limit testing, the current international reference is ISO 17892-12:2018, which remains active and specifically includes the fall-cone method.

For undrained shear-strength index testing by fall cone, the current reference is ISO 17892-6:2017. The former ISO/TS 17892-6:2004 has been withdrawn.

Overall, the Semi-Automatic Digital Cone Penetrometer combines controlled penetration timing, digital measurement and interchangeable cone configurations for precise laboratory testing of fine-grained soils.
