The Jones Riffle Sample Divider is designed to reduce aggregate, mineral, ore and other free-flowing bulk samples into smaller representative test portions. Alternating riffle chutes divide the material into two approximately equal fractions, helping laboratories prepare test samples with reduced operator influence.
- Representative sample reduction: Divides a bulk sample into smaller laboratory test portions.
- Alternating riffle system: Successive chutes direct material into two separate collection fractions.
- 11 chute-size options: Available from 7 mm to 75 mm.
- Fine sample options: Includes 7, 13, 15 and 19 mm chute widths.
- Medium sample options: Includes 25, 30, 38 and 45 mm chute widths.
- Coarse sample options: Includes 50, 64 and 75 mm chute widths.
- Repeatable reduction: One fraction can be passed through the divider again until the required sample quantity is obtained.
- Manual operation: Requires no electrical connection or motor.
- Simple construction: Supports quick and practical laboratory sample preparation.
- Wide application range: Suitable for aggregates, minerals, ores, soils and other free-flowing granular materials.
- Standards support: Suitable for sample reduction procedures described in EN 932-2 and ASTM C702/C702M.

What Is a Jones Riffle Sample Divider?
The Jones Riffle Sample Divider is used to reduce bulk aggregate, mineral and ore samples into smaller representative test portions. The divider contains a series of alternating chutes that direct the material into two separate collection fractions.
This working principle helps laboratories reduce sample quantity while maintaining the characteristics of the original bulk material. The process is particularly useful before particle-size analysis, moisture testing, chemical analysis and other laboratory procedures.
Liya Test manufactures the series with chute widths ranging from 7 mm to 75 mm.
How Does Riffle Sample Division Work?
The operator first mixes the bulk sample to improve homogeneity. The material is then poured evenly across the full width of the divider.
Alternating chutes direct successive portions of material to opposite sides. As a result, the original sample is divided into two approximately equal fractions.
If a smaller test portion is required, one fraction can be passed through the riffle divider again. Repeating the process allows the laboratory to progressively reduce sample quantity without manually selecting material from one location.
7–75 mm Chute Width Options
The product family includes 11 different chute widths:
7, 13, 15, 19, 25, 30, 38, 45, 50, 64 and 75 mm.
Smaller chute widths are suitable for finer free-flowing materials, while larger openings allow coarser particles to pass through without excessive blockage.
Selecting the correct divider size is important. Chutes that are too narrow for the particle size may cause bridging or accumulation and reduce division quality.
Representative Aggregate Sample Reduction
EN 932-2:1999 specifies methods for reducing laboratory aggregate samples to appropriate test portions. The standard specifically includes riffle boxes and mechanical dividers among sample-reduction methods.
The current ASTM standard, ASTM C702/C702M-24, also covers methods for reducing large aggregate samples to suitable testing size while minimising differences between the reduced test sample and the original bulk sample.
Simple Manual Operation
Jones Riffle Sample Dividers do not require electrical power or motorised components.
The simple manual design provides fast operation and allows the divider to be used in laboratories, field facilities and sample-preparation areas without special infrastructure.
Routine cleaning between samples is important, particularly when different mineral or aggregate materials are processed consecutively. Residual particles should be removed from the chutes and collection areas before the next sample is divided.
Laboratory Applications
The Jones Riffle Sample Divider can be used in aggregate laboratories, mining facilities, mineral-processing laboratories, soil laboratories and construction-material testing centres.
Its broad range of chute sizes allows laboratories to select a model according to the maximum particle size and required test portion.
Overall, the Jones Riffle Sample Divider provides a simple and repeatable method for reducing large samples into smaller representative fractions before laboratory testing.
