What Is a Saybolt Viscometer?
The Saybolt Viscometer determines the viscosity and flow characteristics of petroleum and bituminous materials. The system measures the time required for a specified volume of liquid to flow through a standard calibrated orifice under controlled temperature conditions.
Viscosity provides important information for material production and quality control. It also helps laboratories evaluate how a petroleum or bituminous product behaves at different temperatures. The LT-AS0060 supports testing at specified temperatures between approximately 21 °C and 99 °C.
Two-Sample Testing Capacity
The instrument provides capacity for two samples. This arrangement allows laboratories to perform two viscosity determinations under similar operating conditions.
Testing two samples also improves laboratory efficiency during routine quality control. Operators can compare different specimens while maintaining similar bath conditions.
Controlled Temperature Bath
Temperature is an important factor in Saybolt viscosity testing. The instrument uses an oil bath, electrical heater and digital thermoregulator to maintain controlled test conditions.
A stirrer helps distribute heat evenly throughout the bath. The cooling coil also assists with temperature adjustment when required. This configuration supports stable and repeatable test conditions.
Furol and Universal Orifices
The Saybolt Viscometer can be equipped with both Furol and Universal orifices. The operator selects the appropriate type according to the material and required test method.
This interchangeable design allows the same instrument to cover different viscosity ranges. Liya Test supplies the system with two Furol and two Universal orifices.
Complete Test Configuration
The standard system includes the viscosity bath, electrical heating system, digital thermoregulator, thermometer support, stirrer and cooling coil. It is also supplied with a digital thermometer, heat transfer oil and two 60 ml glass Saybolt viscosity flasks.
The LT-G0185 Digital Thermometer has a maximum measuring capability of 300 °C. This value belongs to the thermometer itself and should not be confused with the Saybolt Viscometer’s normal test temperature range.
Testing According to ASTM D88 and AASHTO T72
The Saybolt Viscometer supports viscosity determination according to ASTM D88 and AASHTO T72. These methods are used to determine Saybolt viscosity by measuring flow time under specified conditions. Liya’s current English product page additionally lists GOST R 55421-2013.
