    PRODUCT DETAILS

Charpy/Izod Impact Tester is designed to determine the energy absorbed by metallic materials during fracture under sudden impact loading. The pendulum system breaks a notched specimen under controlled conditions, while the digital control unit calculates and displays the absorbed energy. The product series offers 150 J, 300 J and 450 J capacity options for different metallic material testing requirements.

    • Charpy and Izod Testing: Supports both notched-bar impact test methods with suitable fixtures and strikers.
    • Three Capacity Options: Available in 150 J, 300 J and 450 J versions.
    • Absorbed Energy Measurement: Determines the energy absorbed by the specimen during fracture.
    • Digital Control Unit: Displays test settings and calculated impact energy.
    • Automatic Hammer Locking: The pendulum is automatically secured after the test.
    • Automatic Return: The hammer returns to its initial position for the next test.
    • Repeatable Test Conditions: Helps maintain consistent starting angle and impact conditions.
    • Hardened Steel Frame: Provides rigidity during high-energy impact tests.
    • Charpy/Izod Accessories: Appropriate fixtures and impact tools are used according to the selected method.
    • Single-Phase Power Supply: 220 V, 50–60 Hz, 1 ph.
    • Standards: Manufacturer lists ASTM E23, EN 10045, ISO 148, GOST 9454, AS 1544, JIS Z 2242 and JIS B 7722.

    Description

What Is a Charpy/Izod Impact Tester?

The Charpy Izod Impact Tester determines the energy absorbed by metallic materials when a notched specimen fractures under a sudden impact load. A pendulum hammer is released from a defined starting position and strikes the specimen. After fracture, the system calculates the difference between the initial and remaining pendulum energy.

The measured value provides information about the material’s impact toughness, notch sensitivity and brittle fracture behaviour. ASTM E23-25 currently covers both the Charpy simple-beam method and the Izod cantilever-beam method for metallic materials.

    Charpy and Izod Test Methods

In the Charpy test, the specimen is positioned horizontally on two supports. The pendulum strikes the face opposite the notch. This configuration evaluates the amount of energy absorbed during fracture.

In the Izod test, the specimen is held vertically as a cantilever. The lower section is clamped while the pendulum strikes the free portion. Suitable supports, clamps and strikers must therefore be selected for the required test method.

The Liya system allows the appropriate Charpy or Izod accessories to be installed on the same main machine.

    150, 300 and 450 Joule Models

The product family includes three different impact-energy capacities.

The LT-U0150J provides 150 J capacity. The LT-U0300J increases the available energy to 300 J, while the LT-U0450J offers a maximum capacity of 450 J.

This range allows laboratories to select the machine according to specimen material, dimensions and expected absorbed energy.

Digital Control and Automatic Pendulum System

A digital control unit with a colour touch screen allows the operator to manage the test and view the calculated absorbed energy.

After the specimen fractures, the pendulum is automatically locked. The mechanism then returns it to the initial test position. This feature helps maintain consistent parameters such as starting angle, effective impact velocity and machine energy losses between successive tests.

    Rigid Construction and Safe Testing

The hardened steel structure provides a rigid base for high-energy impact testing. Stable machine geometry is particularly important because unwanted movement can influence measured energy.

Correct specimen positioning is also essential. Therefore, the operator should select the appropriate supports, striker and fixture before each Charpy or Izod test.

    ASTM E23 and ISO 148

ASTM E23-25 is the current ASTM standard for notched-bar impact testing of metallic materials and covers both Charpy and Izod methods.

For the ISO method, ISO 148-1:2016 specifies the Charpy V-notch and U-notch pendulum impact test for determining absorbed energy. The edition remains current, although ISO is currently preparing its revision.

ISO 148-2:2016 covers verification of pendulum impact testing machines and also remains current at present, with a new edition under development.

As a result, the Charpy Izod Impact Tester combines different energy capacities, digital measurement and automatic pendulum control for fast and repeatable metallic material impact testing.
