    Description

    What Is a Concrete Covermeter?

The Concrete Covermeter helps locate steel reinforcement and other concealed elements behind concrete and wall surfaces. The instrument scans the working area before drilling, cutting or installation work begins.

Its primary function is to identify reinforcement within concrete. Depending on the selected detection mode, the device can also locate copper pipes, live electrical cables and wooden supports.

This capability helps technicians select safer working positions and reduce the risk of damaging hidden structural or utility elements.

    Automatic Calibration for Easy Scanning

The Concrete Covermeter uses automatic calibration to simplify preparation before each scan. The operator places the instrument against the surface and selects the required detection mode.

The device is then moved slowly across the inspection area. Audible and visual indicators inform the operator when a concealed object is detected.

For more reliable positioning, the same area should be scanned from several directions. This approach helps identify the approximate boundaries and location of the hidden element.

Surface conditions can influence detection performance. Moisture, closely spaced reinforcement, cavities and overlapping utilities may affect the signal. Therefore, controlled and repeated scanning improves the inspection process.

    Two Different Concrete Covermeter Models

LİYA Test offers two model options for different detection requirements.

The LT-C0159 Concrete Covermeter detects steel reinforcement at depths of up to 100 mm.

The LT-C0160 Concrete Covermeter extends the steel detection depth to 120 mm, providing additional scanning capacity for suitable concrete structures.

Both models detect copper pipes at depths of up to 80 mm. They can also locate live electrical cables at depths of up to 50 mm under suitable conditions.

With weights of approximately 0.29–0.30 kg, both models provide convenient handling during extended laboratory and field inspections.

    Detection of Reinforcement in Concrete

Locating reinforcement before drilling or cutting is important for both safety and structural protection.

The Concrete Covermeter allows the operator to scan the concrete surface and identify the position of hidden steel reinforcement. This information helps reduce the risk of accidentally drilling into reinforcing bars during installation or renovation work.

Repeated scanning from different directions can provide a clearer indication of reinforcement location, particularly in areas containing closely spaced bars.

Detection of Copper Pipes and Live Cables

In addition to reinforcement, the instrument can identify suitable concealed copper pipes and live electrical cables.

Copper detection reaches depths of up to 80 mm, while energized cable detection is available at depths of up to 50 mm under suitable conditions.

This additional capability makes the instrument useful for renovation, installation and maintenance operations where several types of hidden elements may exist behind the working surface.

However, electrical safety should never rely on a single scan. Users should follow the relevant site procedures and electrical safety requirements before drilling or cutting.

    Safe Drilling and Renovation Work

Before scanning, the operator should clean the working surface and position the instrument flat against the material.

The device should be moved slowly and evenly across the inspection area. Fast or irregular movement can reduce detection quality.

When an object is detected, the operator should scan the same location from several directions before marking the working area.

This procedure helps technicians avoid reinforcement, hidden pipework and electrical installations during drilling, cutting and mounting operations.

    Compact and Portable Design

Both Concrete Covermeter models feature lightweight and compact construction.

The LT-C0159 weighs approximately 0.30 kg, while the LT-C0160 weighs approximately 0.29 kg. Their portable design makes them suitable for use in construction sites, laboratories, maintenance operations and renovation projects.

The units operate with a 9 V battery. In addition, they are supplied with a protective carrying case for easier transportation and storage.

Use with BS 1881 Part 204

BS 1881 Part 204 provides recommendations related to electromagnetic covermeter equipment used for locating reinforcement in concrete and evaluating factors that may influence measurements.

For this reason, the reference is directly relevant to the reinforcement-detection function of the Concrete Covermeter.

The product page also references DIN 1045, which relates more broadly to concrete and reinforced-concrete construction requirements. Therefore, it is more appropriate to present this information under Standards / References rather than describing both documents as direct equipment standards.

    Reliable Reinforcement Detection

The Concrete Covermeter combines automatic calibration, multiple detection modes and portable construction in one practical inspection instrument.

With steel detection depths of up to 100 mm or 120 mm, the two available models provide flexibility for different inspection requirements. Additional copper, cable and wood detection functions further expand the range of applications.

As a result, the Concrete Covermeter helps construction, maintenance and laboratory teams identify concealed elements before drilling, cutting or renovation work and supports safer inspection of concrete structures.
