    Description

What Is a Vibratory Hammer Set?

The Vibratory Hammer Set is a laboratory compaction system used to prepare test specimens by applying vibration energy to material placed inside a suitable mould.

The LT-AS0111 system can be used for the preparation of bituminous mixture specimens and, with appropriate mould configurations, for Proctor and CBR specimen preparation.

The complete arrangement combines an electrically powered vibratory hammer with a rigid supporting frame, interchangeable compaction heads and an extension shank. The frame guides the hammer vertically so that vibration energy is transferred to the specimen through the selected compaction head.

    Vibratory Compaction of Bituminous Mixtures

Vibratory compaction is one of the laboratory methods used to produce compacted bituminous specimens.

BS EN 12697-32:2019 specifically covers the preparation of bituminous test specimens using a vibratory compactor. The method can be used with loose mixtures and cores and can support determination of refusal density or evaluation of compactability. The standard remains current.

The operator places the prepared mixture into the corresponding mould and positions the correct compaction head above the specimen. The vibratory hammer then transfers repeated vibration through the head into the material.

Ø102 and Ø146 mm Compaction Heads

The LT-AS0111 system includes two compaction-head sizes.

The LT-AS0111/4 Small Compaction Head has a diameter of Ø102 mm, while the LT-AS0111/5 Large Compaction Head has a diameter of Ø146 mm.

Different head diameters allow the laboratory to adapt the system to different specimen and mould configurations.

A 300 mm LT-AS0111/6 Extension Shank connects the hammer to the selected compaction head and transfers the vibration to the specimen.

    37 kg Guided Moving Mass

LİYA specifies that the hammer frame, hammer and compaction-head arrangement provides a total moving mass of approximately 37 kg as required for the relevant EN vibratory compaction arrangement.

The supporting frame is manufactured from steel and protected against corrosion. It keeps the hammer and compaction head vertically aligned during operation and helps maintain a regular compaction direction.

The frame itself measures 51 × 30 × 112 cm and weighs approximately 45 kg.

    Proctor and CBR Specimen Preparation

The Vibratory Hammer Set can also be used with suitable accessories for preparation of Proctor and CBR specimens.

The test material is placed inside the selected mould and compacted according to the applicable laboratory procedure. LİYA notes that a CBR Type Modified Proctor Mould and related accessories should be ordered separately when required.

For unbound and hydraulically bound road mixtures, BS EN 13286-2:2010 remains the current Proctor compaction reference and defines laboratory reference density and water-content determination by Proctor compaction.

    Compactability Testing

BS EN 12697-10:2017 describes methods for characterizing the compactability of bituminous mixtures using impact, gyratory or vibratory compaction.

The relationship between compaction energy and resulting density or void content can be evaluated using the appropriate laboratory procedure. The standard remains current, although it is presently under review.

For that reason, BS EN 12697-10 remains relevant to the laboratory use of the Vibratory Hammer Set.

    Electrical and Mechanical Construction

The LT-AS0111 complete system has external dimensions of 51 × 30 × 112 cm and weighs approximately 75 kg.

The electrically powered LT-AS0111/1 Vibratory Hammer measures 11 × 43 × 27 cm and weighs approximately 7 kg.

    The system operates from a 220 V, 50–60 Hz, single-phase electrical supply.

Overall, the Vibratory Hammer Set provides a versatile laboratory solution for vibratory preparation of bituminous specimens and for compatible Proctor and CBR specimen-compaction arrangements. Its interchangeable compaction heads, rigid guiding frame and 300 mm extension shank allow the same basic system to support several specimen-preparation applications.
