    Description

What Is a Load Ring CBR Test Machine?

The Load Ring CBR Test Machine is used to determine the California Bearing Ratio of compacted soil and road construction materials in laboratory conditions.

The CBR test evaluates the bearing behaviour of materials used in road construction, including subgrade, sub-base and base materials. During testing, a standard penetration piston is driven into the prepared specimen while the applied load and corresponding penetration are measured.

The LT-S0150/M is equipped with a rigid two-column loading frame and provides a maximum loading capacity of 50 kN.

50 kN Load Ring Measurement System

Unlike the digital CBR model, the LT-S0150/M measures the applied force using a precision load ring.

As the penetration piston moves into the specimen, the load ring deforms proportionally to the applied force. The operator records the corresponding load values throughout the test.

This mechanical measurement arrangement provides a simple and robust method for laboratory CBR testing without requiring a digital load-cell system.

    25 mm Displacement Measurement

Piston penetration is monitored using a 25 mm measuring range with 0.01 mm graduation.

The displacement gauge allows the operator to monitor the movement of the penetration piston throughout the test. Load and penetration readings are then evaluated together to determine the CBR response of the specimen.

    Controlled Penetration Speed

The loading system is driven by an electric motor.

The machine can operate at 1.00 or 1.27 mm/min penetration speeds, with 1.27 mm/min used as the standard working speed for the CBR procedure described on the product configuration.

Controlled penetration speed is important because the measured load response depends on the rate at which the piston enters the prepared specimen.

    Limit Switches and Safety

Upper and lower limit switches control the usable travel of the loading piston.

When the piston reaches either limit, the motor stops automatically. This prevents the loading mechanism from continuing beyond its intended travel range.

The system also includes an emergency stop function for rapid shutdown when required.

    ASTM D1883-21 CBR Testing

The current ASTM D1883-21 covers determination of the California Bearing Ratio of laboratory-compacted soil specimens. ASTM notes that the test is used to evaluate the potential strength of materials intended for subgrade, subbase and base-course applications.

The test is based on measuring resistance to penetration at defined penetration levels and comparing the result with standard reference loads.

    BS EN 13286-47:2021

The current European/British reference is BS EN 13286-47:2021.

This standard covers laboratory determination of the California Bearing Ratio, Immediate Bearing Index and linear swelling of unbound and hydraulically bound mixtures. BSI lists the 2021 edition as current.

The former BS 1377-4:1990 also included CBR testing, but BSI withdrew it on 29 March 2022.

    Laboratory CBR Testing Solution

    The LT-S0150/M measures 52 × 65 × 116 cm and weighs approximately 100 kg.

    It operates from a 220–240 V, 50–60 Hz, single-phase electrical supply.

Overall, the Load Ring CBR Test Machine combines a 50 kN loading frame, mechanical load-ring measurement and controlled piston movement to provide a practical laboratory solution for California Bearing Ratio testing.
