Modified Vicat Cone Penetrometer

STANDART:  ASTM C780 Annex A.1, C185

LT-CE0017    Modified Vicat Cone Penetrometer

    PRODUCT DETAILS

Modified Vicat Cone Penetrometer is designed to determine the consistency of fresh masonry mortars by cone penetration. The apparatus measures the depth reached by a conical plunger after it is released onto the mortar specimen. Its 200 g total moving assembly provides consistent loading conditions and allows laboratories to compare different mortar mixes under the same test procedure.

    • Mortar Consistency Testing: Determines consistency from cone penetration depth.
    • 200 g Plunger Assembly: Provides a standardized load during each penetration.
    • Conical Plunger: Produces controlled penetration into fresh mortar.
    • Adjustable Indicator: Allows penetration depth to be read accurately.
    • Vertical Guide System: Keeps the cone aligned during movement.
    • Mix Comparison: Helps compare different mortar formulations.
    • Water Content Adjustment: Supports evaluation of suitable water content during mix development.
    • Cylindrical Measure Cup: Used to prepare and hold the mortar specimen.
    • Simple Mechanical Operation: Requires no electrical connection.
    • Laboratory Use: Suitable for mortar producers, construction-material laboratories and research facilities.
    • Product Code: LT-CE0017.
    • Primary Test Method: ASTM C780 Annex A1.

    Description

Modified Vicat Cone Penetrometer for Mortar Consistency

The Modified Vicat Cone Penetrometer determines the consistency of fresh masonry mortar by measuring cone penetration depth. The apparatus provides a simple mechanical method for comparing mortar mixes before construction or production use.

The test is especially useful when laboratories need to evaluate the effect of changes in water content or mix proportions. Therefore, different mortar formulations can be compared under controlled and repeatable conditions.

    Cone Penetration Measurement

The operator first fills the cylindrical measure with freshly prepared mortar. The surface is then levelled according to the selected test procedure.

Next, the cone is positioned above the specimen. The operator releases the moving assembly and allows the cone to penetrate freely into the mortar.

The penetration depth indicates the consistency of the mix. A softer mortar generally allows deeper penetration. In contrast, a stiffer mortar produces a lower penetration value.

    200 g Moving Assembly

The total weight of the cone, tube and index pointer is approximately 200 g under the ASTM C780 Annex A1 configuration. This defined mass creates similar loading conditions during each test.

ASTM C780 also defines the modified Vicat arrangement with an extended penetration scale. This allows the apparatus to measure greater penetration depths than a conventional Vicat device used for cement setting-time tests.

    Standardized Conical Plunger

The ASTM procedure specifies an aluminium cone with a nominal diameter of approximately 41.3 mm. The cone geometry and rounded tip provide a consistent contact profile during penetration.

The vertical guide keeps the moving assembly aligned. As a result, the cone enters the mortar in a controlled direction.

    Mortar Mix Comparison

Cone penetration testing helps laboratories compare different batches or trial mixes. For example, users can study how changes in water content affect fresh mortar consistency.

However, the penetration value should always be interpreted according to the selected test procedure. Mix temperature, elapsed time and specimen preparation can all influence the result.

    ASTM C780 Annex A1

ASTM C780 Annex A1 describes the cone penetration method for evaluating masonry mortar consistency. The modified Vicat apparatus forms the core of this procedure. The method also uses a cylindrical measure associated with ASTM C185 dimensional requirements.

As a result, the Modified Vicat Cone Penetrometer provides a compact and repeatable method for fresh mortar consistency control in laboratory applications.
