    Description

What Is a Digital CBR Test Machine?

The Digital CBR Test Machine is used to determine the California Bearing Ratio of compacted soil and road construction materials under laboratory conditions.

CBR testing provides an empirical indication of the bearing characteristics of materials used in subgrade, sub-base and pavement construction. During the test, a standard penetration piston is driven into the prepared specimen while the applied force and corresponding penetration are measured.

The LT-S0150 uses a rigid two-column loading frame with a maximum capacity of 50 kN. Electronic sensors allow load and displacement values to be monitored digitally throughout the test.

    50 kN Digital Load Measurement

The machine is equipped with an LT-G8035 load cell with a capacity of 50 kN.

As the penetration piston moves into the specimen, the load cell continuously measures the applied force. The measured value is transferred to the digital control unit, allowing the operator to monitor the loading behaviour during the test.

Electronic load measurement eliminates the need to read the test force from a conventional mechanical load ring.

    25 mm Displacement Measurement

Penetration is monitored using the LT-G8040 displacement sensor.

Liya Test lists this sensor as 25 × 0.01 mm, corresponding to a 25 mm measurement range with 0.01 mm resolution.

The combination of electronic load and displacement measurement allows the system to follow the force-penetration relationship required for CBR evaluation.

    Digital Touch Screen Control

The English Liya Test product description specifies a 7″ TFT touch-screen digital control unit.

Load and deformation measurements are displayed directly on the control system while the test is running. This provides the operator with a convenient way to monitor specimen response without relying on separate analogue indicators.

The loading piston is driven by an electric motor, providing controlled movement during laboratory testing.

    Automatic Travel Limit Protection

The loading frame incorporates upper and lower limit switches.

When the piston reaches either travel limit, the system automatically stops the motor. This prevents unnecessary movement beyond the usable working range and helps protect the loading mechanism.

    The LT-S0150 operates from a 220–240 V, 50–60 Hz, single-phase electrical supply.

    ASTM D1883-21 CBR Testing

The current ASTM D1883-21 is active and covers determination of the California Bearing Ratio of laboratory-compacted soils. ASTM identifies the test as applicable to materials used in pavement components such as subgrades, subbases and bases.

The test evaluates the resistance of the prepared specimen to penetration and compares the measured load response with standardized reference values.

For this reason, accurate measurement of both penetration and applied load is fundamental to the CBR test.

    BS EN 13286-47:2021

The current British/European reference is BS EN 13286-47:2021.

This standard specifies laboratory methods for determining the California Bearing Ratio, Immediate Bearing Index and linear swelling of unbound and hydraulically bound mixtures. BSI lists the 2021 edition as current.

The former BS 1377-4:1990 also included CBR testing, but BSI officially withdrew that standard on 29 March 2022.

    Laboratory CBR Testing Solution

    The LT-S0150 measures 52 × 65 × 116 cm and weighs approximately 100 kg.

Its 50 kN loading system, electronic load cell, digital displacement sensor and touch-screen control unit provide a compact laboratory solution for CBR testing of compacted soil and road construction materials.

Overall, the Digital CBR Test Machine combines motorized loading with digital measurement to support controlled and repeatable California Bearing Ratio testing.
