    PRODUCT DETAILS

The Shrinkage Limit Test Set is designed to determine the shrinkage characteristics of fine-grained cohesive soils as moisture content decreases. The test helps evaluate the shrinkage limit, shrinkage ratio, volumetric shrinkage and linear shrinkage of soil specimens.

    • Shrinkage limit testing: Determines the moisture content below which further drying does not cause additional volume reduction.
    • Cohesive soil testing: Suitable for fine-grained cohesive soil specimens.
    • Complete laboratory set: Includes the basic accessories required for shrinkage testing.
    • Shrinkage plate: Supplied with three metal prongs.
    • Moisture tins: Aluminium tins in Ø55 × 35 mm and Ø45 × 10 mm sizes.
    • Porcelain dish: Ø120 mm.
    • Flexible spatula: 150 mm.
    • Graduated cylinder: 25 ml capacity.
    • Linear shrinkage mould: Available as LT-S0041.
    • External dimensions: 340 × 290 × 80 mm.
    • Approximate weight: 1.5 kg.
    • Product code: LT-S0040.

    Description

What Is a Shrinkage Limit Test Set?

The Shrinkage Limit Test Set is used to evaluate the dimensional changes of fine-grained cohesive soils as their moisture content decreases. During drying, the volume of a soil specimen initially decreases. However, after a certain moisture content is reached, further water loss no longer produces additional volume reduction.

This moisture content is defined as the shrinkage limit. Determining shrinkage characteristics helps laboratories evaluate the behaviour of cohesive soils affected by changes in moisture conditions.

How Is the Shrinkage Limit Test Performed?

The prepared soil specimen is first placed into the appropriate shrinkage dish or test container. Its surface is levelled and the specimen is then allowed to dry under controlled conditions.

After drying, the change in specimen volume is evaluated. The measured data can be used to determine the shrinkage limit and shrinkage ratio. Depending on the applied test method, volumetric and linear shrinkage characteristics can also be evaluated.

These parameters provide useful information about the dimensional response of cohesive soils during moisture loss.

    Complete LT-S0040 Test Configuration

The LT-S0040 Shrinkage Limit Test Set combines the main accessories required for laboratory testing.

The product group includes aluminium moisture tins, a shrinkage plate with three metal prongs, a Ø120 mm porcelain dish, a 150 mm flexible spatula and a 25 ml graduated glass cylinder. The LT-S0041 Linear Shrinkage Mould is also listed within the same product family.

This configuration allows the laboratory to keep the principal shrinkage-test accessories together in a compact arrangement.

    Compact Laboratory Design

The complete LT-S0040 set has external dimensions of 340 × 290 × 80 mm and weighs approximately 1.5 kg.

Its compact dimensions make the set easy to store and suitable for routine soil-classification laboratories, universities and geotechnical testing facilities.

    Shrinkage Testing Standards

The existing Liya Test product page lists ASTM D427, AASHTO T92, UNE 103-108 and UNI 10014.

However, there is an important standards update. ASTM D427, which covered shrinkage factors by the mercury method, has been withdrawn. ASTM currently lists ASTM D4943-25 as the active method for determining shrinkage factors of cohesive soils by the water submersion method. The current method can be used to determine shrinkage limit, shrinkage ratio, volumetric shrinkage and linear shrinkage.

Overall, the LT-S0040 Shrinkage Limit Test Set provides a compact laboratory solution for evaluating the shrinkage behaviour of fine-grained cohesive soils.
