    Description

What Is a Soil Proctor Penetrometer?

The Soil Proctor Penetrometer is a manually operated instrument used to evaluate the relationship between moisture content and penetration resistance in fine-grained soils.

The device is particularly useful when penetration resistance measurements need to be compared with previously prepared moisture-density or moisture-penetration relationships. This allows laboratories and field personnel to make rapid comparative assessments of fine-grained compacted soils.

The LT-S0101 requires no electrical or hydraulic power, making it suitable for both laboratory and field applications.

    0–55 kg Spring Load System

The LT-S0101 uses a spring-loaded measuring mechanism with a range of 0 to 55 kg.

The scale is divided into 1 kg increments, allowing the operator to monitor penetration resistance as the selected needle is pushed into the soil.

The maximum applied load is retained and read directly on the sliding rod. This simple mechanical arrangement eliminates the need for an electronic display or external measuring unit.

LİYA’s English product page confirms the 0–55 kg spring load range and 1 kg scale subdivisions.

    Nine Interchangeable Stainless Steel Needles

The instrument is supplied with nine interchangeable stainless steel penetration needles.

    Available diameters are:

    • Ø4.52 mm
    • Ø5.23 mm
    • Ø6.40 mm
    • Ø9.07 mm
    • Ø12.83 mm
    • Ø16.54 mm
    • Ø20.22 mm
    • Ø24.79 mm
    • Ø28.55 mm

Different needle diameters provide different contact areas. This allows the operator to select a suitable needle according to the expected resistance of the soil.

Smaller needles are useful where penetration resistance is relatively high, while larger contact areas can be selected for softer material.

    Moisture Content and Penetration Resistance

The former ASTM D1558 method was developed to establish relationships between moisture content, density and penetration resistance in fine-grained soils.

The procedure could be used together with compaction curves prepared using ASTM D698 or ASTM D1557 methods. ASTM specifically described the technique as a rapid field method for estimating approximate soil moisture when a suitable family of moisture-penetration curves had already been prepared.

Therefore, the Soil Proctor Penetrometer does not directly measure moisture content.

Instead, it measures penetration resistance. The result must then be compared with previously established correlations for the soil being evaluated.

    Relationship with Proctor Compaction Testing

Proctor compaction testing determines the relationship between water content and dry unit weight.

The current ASTM D698-12(2021) remains active for standard-effort compaction testing, while ASTM D1557-12(2021) remains active for modified-effort compaction.

Penetrometer measurements can support these studies by providing an additional indication of how soil resistance changes with moisture condition.

However, penetration resistance should not be treated as a direct substitute for laboratory dry-density determination.

    Limitations of the Method

The former ASTM D1558 method specifically noted that penetration-resistance measurements may be unreliable for very dry compacted specimens and highly granular soils.

For this reason, the Soil Proctor Penetrometer is primarily intended for fine-grained soils where a useful moisture-penetration relationship can be established.

Material type, compaction effort, moisture distribution and selected needle size can all affect the measured resistance.

    ASTM D1558 Standard Status

LİYA’s current product page still lists ASTM D1558 as the standard reference.

However, ASTM officially withdrew the latest edition, ASTM D1558-10, in 2019 and states that there is no replacement.

For this reason, the standard should not be presented on the new website as a current compliance standard. A more technically accurate description is:

Legacy ASTM Reference: ASTM D1558-10 — Withdrawn 2019, No Replacement

Overall, the Soil Proctor Penetrometer provides a compact and fully mechanical solution for comparative penetration-resistance testing of fine-grained soils. Its 0–55 kg measuring range and nine interchangeable stainless steel needles make it suitable for laboratory and field soil evaluation.
