What Is a Linear Shrinkage Mould?
The Linear Shrinkage Mould is used to determine the dimensional change of fine-grained soils as they lose moisture during drying. The test provides a practical way to evaluate the shrinkage behaviour of soils containing clay and other fine particles.
As the moisture content of a soil decreases, the specimen may reduce in volume and length. Measuring this change helps laboratories compare the behaviour of different soil specimens and supports broader soil-classification studies.
The LT-S0041 Linear Shrinkage Mould is designed specifically for preparing a specimen with a controlled geometry for this purpose. Liya Test lists the product within its soil-classification equipment range.
How Is the Linear Shrinkage Test Performed?
The prepared soil is placed carefully into the mould and distributed along its full length. The surface is then levelled to produce a consistent specimen.
After preparation, the specimen is dried according to the applicable laboratory procedure. As moisture is removed, the soil may contract along its length.
Once drying is complete, the final specimen length is compared with its original moulded length. This dimensional difference is used to evaluate the linear shrinkage of the soil.
The method provides useful information about the dimensional response of fine-grained soils under changing moisture conditions.
140 mm Test Specimen
The LT-S0041 mould prepares a specimen approximately 140 mm long and has a 12.5 mm radius.
This defined geometry provides a consistent reference for comparing the specimen before and after drying. The controlled mould dimensions also help laboratories perform repeated tests under similar conditions.
Compact Laboratory Design
The mould has external dimensions of only 20 × 30 × 160 mm and weighs approximately 0.3 kg.
Its small size makes it easy to use on standard laboratory benches and convenient to store with other soil-classification accessories.
The LT-S0041 is also listed as an accessory within Liya Test’s Shrinkage Limit Test Set product family.
BS 1377-2 Soil Shrinkage Testing
The existing Liya Test product page references BS 1377:2. The current version of this standard is BS 1377-2:2022, which replaced BS 1377-2:1990 in March 2022. BSI specifically includes shrinkage tests within the scope of BS 1377-2:2022.
Overall, the LT-S0041 Linear Shrinkage Mould provides a simple and compact laboratory solution for evaluating the linear shrinkage behaviour of fine-grained soils.
