The CBR Mould Set is designed for preparation and testing of soil, subgrade, sub-base and road construction materials for California Bearing Ratio (CBR) determination. Different mould and accessory configurations are available for ASTM/AASHTO, EN and BS-based laboratory procedures. The sets include corrosion-protected steel moulds and compatible base plates, extension collars, spacer discs and surcharge weights. LİYA currently lists three main configurations: LT-S0160, LT-S0170 and LT-S0180.
- CBR specimen preparation: Holds compacted soil specimens in the required test geometry.
- ASTM/AASHTO configuration: LT-S0160 supports ASTM D1883 and AASHTO T 193 applications.
- ASTM mould dimensions: Ø152.4 × 177.8 mm.
- Extension collar: ASTM/AASHTO version is Ø152.4 × 50 mm.
- EN configuration: LT-S0170 is configured for BS EN 13286-47:2021 applications.
- EN mould: Uses the LT-S0061 B Type Modified Proctor Mould, Ø150 × 120 mm.
- BS/EN configuration: LT-S0180 provides the alternative BS/EN mould and accessory arrangement.
- BS type mould: Ø152 × 127 mm.
- Base plate options: Solid and perforated base plates are available according to the selected system.
- Surcharge weights: Annular and slotted weights simulate overlying pavement loads during CBR testing.
- Spacer components: Spacer discs or compaction plugs support correct specimen preparation.
- Filter accessories: Filter paper and mesh screens are available according to the selected standard configuration.
- Swelling accessories: Swell plate, tripod and dial indicators can be ordered separately.
- Soaking tank: Optional LT-S0157 tank accommodates up to 6 CBR moulds.
- Corrosion protection: Steel moulds and accessories are plated for laboratory durability.

What Is a CBR Mould Set?
The CBR Mould Set is used to prepare and contain compacted soil and road-material specimens for the California Bearing Ratio test.
CBR testing evaluates the bearing strength of materials used in pavement structures, including subgrade, sub-base and base materials. The specimen is compacted inside a cylindrical mould under defined conditions and can subsequently be soaked when required before the penetration test is performed.
LİYA provides different mould configurations for ASTM/AASHTO, EN and BS-related laboratory procedures. The moulds and accessories are manufactured from steel and protected against corrosion for repeated laboratory use.
ASTM and AASHTO CBR Mould Set
The LT-S0160 CBR Mould Set is intended for ASTM and AASHTO configurations.
The main mould has a diameter of 152.4 mm (6 in) and a height of 177.8 mm (7 in). The matching extension collar measures Ø152.4 × 50 mm.
The set can be used with perforated and solid base plates, a T-handle spacer disc, annular surcharge weights and slotted surcharge weights.
ASTM D1883-21 is the active ASTM method for determination of CBR using laboratory-compacted soils. ASTM describes the method for evaluating materials used in pavement subgrades, sub-bases and base courses.
AASHTO T 193-22 similarly covers CBR determination of laboratory-compacted pavement materials and remains the current AASHTO edition.
EN 13286-47 CBR Configuration
The LT-S0170 configuration supports CBR testing according to BS EN 13286-47:2021.
This system uses the LT-S0061 B Type Modified Proctor Mould, measuring Ø150 × 120 mm, together with the corresponding extension collar, base plates, spacer disc and surcharge weights.
BS EN 13286-47:2021 specifies laboratory methods for determination of California Bearing Ratio, Immediate Bearing Index and linear swelling of unbound and hydraulically bound mixtures. It superseded the withdrawn 2012 edition.
Surcharge Weights and Base Plates
CBR testing requires the specimen to represent field loading conditions as closely as the specified procedure allows.
Annular and slotted surcharge weights are placed above the specimen to simulate the effect of pavement layers or overburden during testing.
Solid and perforated base plates are available for different preparation and soaking arrangements. The correct combination depends on the selected test standard and specimen conditioning procedure.
CBR Swelling Accessories
When soaked CBR testing is required, the specimen may remain submerged before penetration testing.
LİYA provides an optional swell plate, tripod and dial indicator system for monitoring vertical expansion of the specimen.
Analog and digital displacement indicators are available, including 30 × 0.01 mm, 25 × 0.01 mm and 12.7 × 0.001 mm options. The optional LT-S0157 CBR Soaking Tank accommodates up to six CBR moulds and has internal dimensions of 500 × 700 × 400 mm.
Different Mould Configurations
The choice of CBR mould should always follow the laboratory procedure being used.
LİYA supplies three main groups:
- LT-S0160 for ASTM and AASHTO applications,
- LT-S0170 for EN 13286-47 applications,
- LT-S0180 for BS/EN-related configurations.
The sets use different mould dimensions and accessory arrangements, so moulds, extension collars, base plates and surcharge components should be selected as one compatible system.
