What Is a Fully Automatic Direct Shear Test Machine?
The Fully Automatic Direct Shear Test Machine is designed to determine the shear strength characteristics of soil specimens under controlled laboratory conditions. Direct shear testing is particularly useful for evaluating engineering parameters such as cohesion and the angle of internal friction.
The LT-S0262 system automates important stages of the test, including consolidation and controlled shear loading. This reduces continuous operator intervention and provides a more consistent testing procedure.
ASTM D3080/D3080M covers the determination of consolidated drained shear strength under direct shear conditions. The current active ASTM edition is ASTM D3080/D3080M-23e1.
Fully Automatic Vertical Loading
The current Liya Test English product description specifies an electro-servo vertical loading system capable of applying up to 10 kN.
Unlike conventional systems that depend heavily on manual weight application, the automatic loading arrangement controls the selected normal load electronically. This helps laboratories perform consolidation and shear stages with less manual intervention.
Servo-Controlled Direct Shear Testing
After consolidation, the specimen is sheared horizontally at a controlled displacement rate. The current product information specifies a variable speed range reaching approximately 9.9999 mm/min.
A 5 kN load cell measures the shear force during the test. Vertical and horizontal displacement sensors allow the system to monitor specimen movement throughout the procedure.
Automatic Data Evaluation
The machine can be connected to a computer for digital test management and result evaluation.
Measured data can be used to generate graphical relationships between shear stress and normal stress. The software also supports automatic determination of cohesion (C) and internal friction angle (φ).
This automated data-processing structure helps reduce manual calculation and simplifies the comparison of specimens tested under different normal stresses.
Multiple Shear Box Configurations
The machine supports several specimen geometries, including 60 × 60 mm, Ø60 mm, 100 × 100 mm, Ø100 mm and Ø2.5 inch.
Matching shear box assemblies are available with loading pads, retaining plates, porous plates, plane grids, perforated grids, specimen cutters and specimen extractors.
ASTM and ISO Direct Shear Standards
The active ISO 17892-10:2018 standard covers laboratory determination of effective soil shear strength using shear-box or ring-shear methods under consolidated drained conditions. ISO confirms that the 2018 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and remains current. The previous ISO/TS 17892-10:2004 has been withdrawn.
BS 1377-7:1990 also remains the current BSI release for soil shear-strength testing and includes drained direct shear procedures.
Overall, the LT-S0262 Fully Automatic Direct Shear Test Machine combines automatic normal loading, servo-controlled shear movement and digital test evaluation to support advanced soil-mechanics and geotechnical laboratory applications.
