What Is a Ball & Rod Mill?
The Ball & Rod Mill is designed to grind mineral, ore and other solid laboratory samples using either wet or dry methods. The system rotates grinding tubes on rubber-coated drive rollers and allows laboratories to prepare samples for subsequent analysis.
The LT-M0606 Ball & Rod Mill can operate with two grinding tubes simultaneously. This configuration allows two samples or two different grinding arrangements to be processed within the same working cycle.
Liya Test specifies a feed size below 8 mm, a sample quantity of approximately 500–1500 ml and a final fineness below 40 µm under suitable grinding conditions.
6 and 9 Litre Stainless Steel Grinding Tubes
The system is supplied with two different grinding tube sizes. The 6 litre tube is manufactured from AISI 304 stainless steel and measures approximately Ø200 × 200 mm.
The larger 9 litre tube is also manufactured from AISI 304 stainless steel and measures approximately Ø200 × 300 mm.
Different tube capacities provide flexibility according to sample quantity. Stainless steel construction also supports both wet and dry grinding applications.
Adjustable 0–300 rpm Roller Speed
The machine uses two rubber-coated drive rollers measuring approximately Ø80 × 800 mm. An electronic motor speed controller allows roller speed to be adjusted continuously between 0 and 300 rpm.
The operator can select an appropriate speed according to material characteristics, grinding media and required particle size. Maintaining the same speed, grinding time and sample charge is particularly important when comparing different laboratory samples.
Ball and Rod Grinding Options
Each grinding tube is supplied with both ball and rod grinding media.
The grinding balls are manufactured from heat-treated hardened chrome-alloy steel. These balls generate repeated impact and friction forces as the tube rotates.
The grinding rods are manufactured from AISI 304 stainless steel. Their extended contact surfaces provide a different grinding action compared with balls. This allows laboratories to select the most suitable grinding configuration according to the sample and required particle-size distribution.
Wet and Dry Sample Preparation
The LT-M0606 supports both wet and dry grinding. Dry grinding provides a straightforward solution for many mineral and ore preparation applications, while wet grinding can be useful when the selected laboratory procedure requires liquid-assisted size reduction.
The achievable final fineness depends on several factors, including material hardness, moisture, initial particle size, grinding time, roller speed and grinding-media loading.
For this reason, the published <40 µm value should be considered an achievable performance under appropriate conditions rather than an identical result for every material.
Motor and Heavy-Duty Construction
The Ball & Rod Mill uses a 1.5 HP motor operating at approximately 900 rpm. Liya’s English specification lists the complete machine at approximately 150 × 50 × 100 cm with a weight of 350 kg.
The substantial frame helps maintain stability during continuous tube rotation and laboratory grinding operations.
Laboratory Applications
The Ball & Rod Mill is suitable for mineral processing laboratories, mining facilities, universities, research centres and industrial quality control departments.
Its dual-tube design, adjustable roller speed and interchangeable ball or rod grinding media provide flexibility for different sample-preparation requirements.
Overall, the LT-M0606 Ball & Rod Mill combines 6 and 9 litre stainless steel tubes, 0–300 rpm variable speed, wet and dry grinding capability and two simultaneous grinding positions. Therefore, laboratories can prepare mineral and ore samples efficiently under controlled operating conditions.
