Vicat Test Set is designed to determine the standard consistency and setting times of hydraulic cement paste. The manual frame allows different plungers and needles to penetrate the prepared cement paste under controlled conditions. Separate EN and ASTM configurations allow laboratories to perform consistency and setting-time tests according to the selected standard.

Vicat Test Set for Cement Consistency and Setting Time
The Vicat Test Set is used to determine the standard consistency and setting behaviour of hydraulic cement paste. The manual apparatus allows a plunger or needle to penetrate a prepared specimen under controlled conditions. Laboratories can therefore evaluate the water demand of the paste and monitor its hardening process.
Liya Test offers separate EN and ASTM configurations, allowing the laboratory to select the appropriate mould and penetration accessories for the required test method.
Standard Consistency Determination
The consistency test determines the amount of water required to prepare cement paste at a defined reference consistency.
The operator first prepares a cement-water mixture and fills the Vicat mould. The Ø10 mm consistency plunger is then positioned above the specimen and released. The penetration depth shows whether the paste has reached the required consistency.
If the result falls outside the specified range, the water quantity is adjusted and the test is repeated.
ASTM C187-25 specifically covers the amount of water required to produce hydraulic cement paste of normal consistency.
Initial Setting Time
After preparing the paste at the required consistency, the operator uses the appropriate initial setting needle.
As hydration progresses, the cement paste gradually resists penetration. Measurements are taken at defined intervals until the penetration reaches the criterion specified by the selected standard.
The EN configuration uses an Ø1.13 mm initial setting needle, while the ASTM set uses an Ø1 mm initial setting needle.
Final Setting Time
The final setting stage is evaluated with the corresponding final-setting accessory. As the paste becomes harder, penetration decreases further.
The operator records the time between water addition and the point at which the specimen satisfies the final-setting criterion. This result helps laboratories compare cement batches and monitor production consistency.
Compact Manual Test System
The Vicat frame operates mechanically and does not require electrical power. Its compact structure measures 150 × 190 × 318 mm and weighs approximately 3 kg. This makes the apparatus suitable for routine cement laboratories and educational facilities.
Removable moulds, needles and the supporting plate also simplify cleaning between tests.
EN 196-3 and ASTM Vicat Testing
EN 196-3:2016 defines methods for determining standard consistence and cement setting times using Vicat equipment.
For ASTM testing, ASTM C187-25 covers normal consistency and ASTM C191-26 covers setting time by Vicat needle. ASTM C191 includes the manually operated standard Vicat apparatus as its reference method.
As a result, the Vicat Test Set combines interchangeable penetration accessories, EN and ASTM configurations and a compact mechanical frame for reliable cement consistency and setting-time determination.
