    Description

Mud Balance for Drilling Fluid Density Testing

The Mud Balance provides a simple mechanical method for determining the density of drilling fluids. The system combines a constant-volume sample cup with a graduated balance arm, movable rider and integrated spirit level. This arrangement allows field and laboratory personnel to obtain density readings quickly without electrical power.

Drilling-fluid density is an important parameter during drilling operations. Regular measurements help operators monitor changes in fluid properties and compare prepared mixtures during routine quality-control work.

    Constant-Volume Sample Cup

A fixed-volume cup is mounted at one end of the graduated balance arm. The operator completely fills this cup with the drilling fluid and installs the lid.

Excess material is removed before the measurement. Using the same cup volume for every test helps maintain consistent test conditions.

The counterbalance and rider are positioned on the opposite side of the arm. Together, these components allow the apparatus to reach mechanical equilibrium.

    Graduated Arm and Movable Rider

After filling the cup, the operator places the balance on its knife-edge support. The movable rider is then adjusted along the graduated arm.

The built-in spirit level shows when the arm reaches the correct horizontal position. Once the bubble is centred, the density value can be read directly from the graduated scale.

This direct-reading system reduces the need for additional electronic measuring equipment.

    Field and Laboratory Operation

The Mud Balance uses a fully mechanical measuring principle. Therefore, it can operate in drilling sites, mobile laboratories and conventional laboratory environments without an external power source.

Its external dimensions are 550 × 110 × 100 mm, and the unit weighs approximately 1 kg. Liya also lists a dedicated carrying case under product code LT-CE0042/1.

    Water-Based and Oil-Based Drilling Fluids

API RP 13B-1 provides standardized field-testing procedures for water-based drilling fluids and specifically includes the determination of drilling-fluid density.

API also maintains RP 13B-2 for field testing of oil-based drilling fluids. Therefore, the same general type of mud balance can support density control for both fluid systems when used according to the appropriate procedure.

    Well Cement Applications

Liya’s English product information also identifies the Mud Balance as suitable for testing oil-well cement mixtures. API currently maintains RP 10B-2 – Recommended Practice for Testing Well Cements for this application area.

As a result, the Mud Balance combines simple operation, direct reading and portable construction for routine density measurements in drilling-fluid and suitable well-cement applications.
