100 kN Direct Shear Test Machine for Large Specimens
The 100 kN Direct Shear Test Machine is designed to determine the consolidated drained shear strength of large soil and rock specimens. The machine applies controlled normal stress to the specimen and then moves the shear box horizontally at a selected rate.
During testing, the system records shear force, horizontal displacement and vertical displacement. This allows laboratories to evaluate the behaviour of the specimen throughout consolidation and shearing.
Fully Automatic Consolidation and Shear Control
The normal load is applied through an automatic servo-controlled consolidation system. The operator enters the required test parameters before starting the procedure.
The machine first completes the consolidation stage. It then begins the direct shear stage automatically. This sequence reduces manual intervention and helps create more consistent conditions between different specimens.
The system can stop according to the selected test condition, such as specimen failure or a predetermined horizontal displacement.
Precise Shear Rate Control
The machine provides a wide adjustable shear-speed range. This allows the operator to select a suitable displacement rate according to soil permeability, specimen type and the selected test procedure.
For consolidated drained testing, the shear rate must be slow enough to allow excess pore-water pressure to dissipate. ASTM D3080/D3080M specifically requires drained conditions during shearing.
Digital Measurement and Real-Time Graphs
Digital sensors continuously monitor shear force, vertical movement and horizontal displacement.
The control system displays test values and graphs in real time. Users can therefore follow shear stress and displacement behaviour throughout the test.
The software also stores peak and residual shear values. Test information can be saved for later analysis and reporting.
Cohesion and Internal Friction Angle
A single test provides the shear resistance under one selected normal stress. To determine soil shear-strength parameters, several similar specimens are tested under different normal stresses.
Both ASTM D3080/D3080M and ISO 17892-10 indicate that three or more tests at different normal pressures are generally used when determining shear-strength parameters.
The software can use the resulting normal stress and peak shear stress values to determine cohesion (c) and the internal friction angle (φ).
Large Soil and Rock Specimen Testing
The large-capacity system is intended for specimens that exceed the dimensions handled by conventional small direct shear machines. Suitable shear box assemblies allow testing of large soil specimens and appropriate rock configurations.
As a result, the 100 kN Direct Shear Test Machine combines high load capacity, automatic consolidation, precise displacement control and digital analysis in one advanced laboratory system.
