Sand Equivalent Test Set is used to determine the sand equivalent value of fine aggregates and all-in aggregates, providing an indication of the relative proportion of clay-like or plastic fines present in the material. Separate EN and ASTM model options allow laboratories to select the appropriate configuration according to the required test method. The complete set provides the main cylinders, siphon assembly, weighted foot assembly and carrying equipment required for practical laboratory testing.

What Is a Sand Equivalent Test Set?
The Sand Equivalent Test Set is used to evaluate the relative proportion of clay-like, plastic and other fine materials contained in granular soils and fine aggregates. The method produces a numerical sand equivalent value that helps laboratories compare the cleanliness and quality of different aggregate samples.
The test is widely used in aggregate, asphalt and construction-material quality control. ASTM D2419-22 describes the sand equivalent test as a rapid method for assessing the relative amount and character of clay-size or plastic fines and dust in granular soils and fine aggregates. ASTM currently lists the 2022 edition as active.
EN and ASTM Model Options
Liya Test provides two main configurations. LT-A0001 Sand Equivalent Test Set is designed for the EN method, while LT-A0002 is supplied for ASTM applications.
The EN configuration includes the corresponding graduated measuring cylinders. The ASTM model uses a fully graduated sand equivalent cylinder suitable for the ASTM procedure.
This model separation helps laboratories select the required apparatus according to the project specification without modifying the basic test arrangement.
Complete Sand Equivalent Test Equipment
The set includes the main accessories required for sample preparation and measurement. The siphon assembly consists of an irrigator tube, rubber stopper, rubber hose and a 5 litre plastic container.
A weighted foot assembly is also supplied. This component is lowered into the graduated cylinder after sedimentation and helps the operator determine the sand level in a controlled manner.
A carrying case allows the main components to be stored and transported together. Liya also lists supplementary equipment such as a steel ruler, plastic funnel and measuring can within the product family.
How Does the Sand Equivalent Test Work?
The prepared aggregate sample is placed in the graduated cylinder together with the specified working solution. The sample is then agitated according to the selected standard procedure.
After agitation, the material is allowed to settle. Coarser sand particles accumulate toward the bottom of the cylinder, while finer clay-like material remains suspended for a longer period.
The operator records the required sediment levels and calculates the sand equivalent value from the specified measurements.
A higher sand equivalent value generally indicates a greater proportion of sand-sized particles relative to clay-like fines. However, acceptance limits should always be evaluated according to the applicable project or material specification.
EN 933-8 and ASTM D2419 Testing
The current European reference is EN 933-8:2012+A1:2015, which covers determination of the sand equivalent value of the 0/2 mm fraction of fine or all-in aggregates. BSI currently lists this edition as the current release.
The Sand Equivalent Test Set therefore provides laboratories with the cylinders, siphon system and measuring accessories required to perform consistent aggregate-fines assessment according to established EN and ASTM methods.
