What Is a Hydrometer?<\/h2>\n

A Hydrometer<\/strong> is a laboratory measuring instrument used to evaluate the density of liquids or to support sedimentation-based particle size analysis of fine-grained soils.<\/p>\n

Liya Test offers two main product groups under this category. The first consists of 13 Density Hydrometer models<\/strong> covering measuring ranges from 700 to 2000<\/strong>. The second includes 151H and 152H Hydrometers<\/strong>, which are commonly used in soil sedimentation analysis.<\/p>\n

This wide selection enables laboratories to choose a model according to the expected density range and the test procedure.<\/p>\n

Density Hydrometers from 700 to 2000<\/h2>\n

The Liya Test Density Hydrometer range begins with LT-G0670, 700\u2013800<\/strong>, and continues in consecutive 100-unit intervals up to LT-G0682, 1900\u20132000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This provides a total of 13 different measuring ranges<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Choosing a hydrometer with a range close to the expected liquid density allows the operator to work within an appropriate section of the instrument scale.<\/p>\n

All listed Density Hydrometer models have common dimensions of 30 \u00d7 30 \u00d7 300 mm<\/strong> and an approximate weight of 0.10 kg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

How Does a Density Hydrometer Work?<\/h2>\n

A hydrometer operates according to the buoyancy principle.<\/p>\n

The instrument is placed carefully into the liquid and allowed to float freely. The depth at which it stabilises depends on the density of the liquid.<\/p>\n

The operator then reads the scale at the appropriate liquid level according to the test method.<\/p>\n

Liquids with different densities cause the hydrometer to float at different positions. For this reason, selecting the correct measuring range is essential for convenient and readable measurements.<\/p>\n

151H Hydrometer<\/h2>\n

The LT-S0005\/4 Hydrometer 151H<\/strong> is listed with a measuring range of 0.995\u20131.038<\/strong> and a graduation of 0.001<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This type of hydrometer is used in sedimentation-based soil analysis where the density or specific gravity of the soil-water suspension changes as particles settle.<\/p>\n

The hydrometer readings taken at specified times provide information that can be used during particle size distribution calculations.<\/p>\n

152H Hydrometer<\/h2>\n

The LT-S0005\/5 Hydrometer 152H<\/strong> provides a scale from -5 to +60 g\/L<\/strong> with 1 g\/L graduation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The 152H model is another common option for sedimentation analysis of fine soil particles. Instead of the specific gravity-type scale used by the 151H model, the 152H scale expresses suspension concentration in grams per litre.<\/p>\n

The selected hydrometer type should therefore match the calculation method and laboratory procedure being followed.<\/p>\n

Hydrometer Analysis of Fine-Grained Soils<\/h2>\n

Hydrometer analysis is particularly useful for soil particles that are too small to be separated effectively by conventional sieving alone.<\/p>\n

The prepared soil suspension is transferred into a sedimentation cylinder. As the particles settle, larger particles generally descend more rapidly while smaller particles remain suspended for longer periods.<\/p>\n

Hydrometer readings are taken at defined times. These measurements are then evaluated together with temperature, elapsed time and other test parameters to estimate the distribution of fine particle sizes.<\/p>\n

The current ASTM method associated with sedimentation analysis of fine-grained soils is ASTM D7928<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Choosing the Correct Hydrometer<\/h2>\n

The correct model depends primarily on the application.<\/p>\n

For general liquid density measurements, users should select one of the 13 Density Hydrometer ranges<\/strong> according to the expected density.<\/p>\n

For soil sedimentation analysis, the laboratory procedure may require either a 151H<\/strong> or 152H<\/strong> model.<\/p>\n
