What Is a CBR Mould Set?<\/h2>\n

The CBR Mould Set<\/strong> is used to prepare and contain compacted soil and road-material specimens for the California Bearing Ratio test<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

CBR testing evaluates the bearing strength of materials used in pavement structures, including subgrade, sub-base and base materials<\/strong>. The specimen is compacted inside a cylindrical mould under defined conditions and can subsequently be soaked when required before the penetration test is performed.<\/p>\n

L\u0130YA provides different mould configurations for ASTM\/AASHTO, EN and BS-related laboratory procedures<\/strong>. The moulds and accessories are manufactured from steel and protected against corrosion for repeated laboratory use.<\/p>\n

ASTM and AASHTO CBR Mould Set<\/h2>\n

The LT-S0160 CBR Mould Set<\/strong> is intended for ASTM and AASHTO configurations.<\/p>\n

The main mould has a diameter of 152.4 mm (6 in)<\/strong> and a height of 177.8 mm (7 in)<\/strong>. The matching extension collar measures \u00d8152.4 \u00d7 50 mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The set can be used with perforated and solid base plates, a T-handle spacer disc, annular surcharge weights and slotted surcharge weights.<\/p>\n

ASTM D1883-21<\/strong> is the active ASTM method for determination of CBR using laboratory-compacted soils. ASTM describes the method for evaluating materials used in pavement subgrades, sub-bases and base courses.<\/p>\n

AASHTO T 193-22<\/strong> similarly covers CBR determination of laboratory-compacted pavement materials and remains the current AASHTO edition.<\/p>\n

EN 13286-47 CBR Configuration<\/h2>\n

The LT-S0170<\/strong> configuration supports CBR testing according to BS EN 13286-47:2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This system uses the LT-S0061 B Type Modified Proctor Mould<\/strong>, measuring \u00d8150 \u00d7 120 mm<\/strong>, together with the corresponding extension collar, base plates, spacer disc and surcharge weights.<\/p>\n

BS EN 13286-47:2021 specifies laboratory methods for determination of California Bearing Ratio, Immediate Bearing Index and linear swelling<\/strong> of unbound and hydraulically bound mixtures. It superseded the withdrawn 2012 edition.<\/p>\n

Surcharge Weights and Base Plates<\/h2>\n

CBR testing requires the specimen to represent field loading conditions as closely as the specified procedure allows.<\/p>\n

Annular and slotted surcharge weights<\/strong> are placed above the specimen to simulate the effect of pavement layers or overburden during testing.<\/p>\n

Solid and perforated base plates are available for different preparation and soaking arrangements. The correct combination depends on the selected test standard and specimen conditioning procedure.<\/p>\n

CBR Swelling Accessories<\/h2>\n

When soaked CBR testing is required, the specimen may remain submerged before penetration testing.<\/p>\n

L\u0130YA provides an optional swell plate, tripod and dial indicator system<\/strong> for monitoring vertical expansion of the specimen.<\/p>\n

Analog and digital displacement indicators are available, including 30 \u00d7 0.01 mm, 25 \u00d7 0.01 mm and 12.7 \u00d7 0.001 mm<\/strong> options. The optional LT-S0157 CBR Soaking Tank<\/strong> accommodates up to six CBR moulds<\/strong> and has internal dimensions of 500 \u00d7 700 \u00d7 400 mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Different Mould Configurations<\/h2>\n

The choice of CBR mould should always follow the laboratory procedure being used.<\/p>\n

L\u0130YA supplies three main groups:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • LT-S0160<\/strong> for ASTM and AASHTO applications,<\/li>\n
  • LT-S0170<\/strong> for EN 13286-47 applications,<\/li>\n
  • LT-S0180<\/strong> for BS\/EN-related configurations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The sets use different mould dimensions and accessory arrangements, so moulds, extension collars, base plates and surcharge components should be selected as one compatible system.<\/p>\n

    Overall, the CBR Mould Set<\/strong> provides the moulds and specimen-preparation accessories required for controlled CBR laboratory workflows across several international test procedures.<\/p>\n
