The operator records the corresponding load values throughout the test.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3723\" data-end=\"3871\">This mechanical measurement arrangement provides a simple and robust method for laboratory CBR testing without requiring a digital load-cell system.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3873\" data-end=\"3906\">25 mm Displacement Measurement<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3908\" data-end=\"3998\">Piston penetration is monitored using a <strong data-start=\"3948\" data-end=\"3997\">25 mm measuring range with 0.01 mm graduation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4000\" data-end=\"4218\">The displacement gauge allows the operator to monitor the movement of the penetration piston throughout the test. Load and penetration readings are then evaluated together to determine the CBR response of the specimen.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4220\" data-end=\"4251\">Controlled Penetration Speed<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4253\" data-end=\"4303\">The loading system is driven by an electric motor.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4305\" data-end=\"4493\">The machine can operate at <strong data-start=\"4332\" data-end=\"4355\">1.00 or 1.27 mm\/min<\/strong> penetration speeds, with <strong data-start=\"4381\" data-end=\"4396\">1.27 mm\/min<\/strong> used as the standard working speed for the CBR procedure described on the product configuration.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4495\" data-end=\"4641\">Controlled penetration speed is important because the measured load response depends on the rate at which the piston enters the prepared specimen.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4643\" data-end=\"4671\">Limit Switches and Safety<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4673\" data-end=\"4752\">Upper and lower limit switches control the usable travel of the loading piston.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4754\" data-end=\"4908\">When the piston reaches either limit, the motor stops automatically. This prevents the loading mechanism from continuing beyond its intended travel range.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4910\" data-end=\"4995\">The system also includes an emergency stop function for rapid shutdown when required.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4997\" data-end=\"5025\">ASTM D1883-21 CBR Testing<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5027\" data-end=\"5333\">The current <strong data-start=\"5039\" data-end=\"5056\">ASTM D1883-21<\/strong> covers determination of the California Bearing Ratio of laboratory-compacted soil specimens. ASTM notes that the test is used to evaluate the potential strength of materials intended for <strong data-start=\"5244\" data-end=\"5294\">subgrade, subbase and base-course applications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5335\" data-end=\"5477\">The test is based on measuring resistance to penetration at defined penetration levels and comparing the result with standard reference loads.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"5479\" data-end=\"5501\">BS EN 13286-47:2021<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5503\" data-end=\"5569\">The current European\/British reference is <strong data-start=\"5545\" data-end=\"5568\">BS EN 13286-47:2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5571\" data-end=\"5819\">This standard covers laboratory determination of the <strong data-start=\"5624\" data-end=\"5697\">California Bearing Ratio, Immediate Bearing Index and linear swelling<\/strong> of unbound and hydraulically bound mixtures. BSI lists the 2021 edition as current.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5821\" data-end=\"5957\">The former <strong data-start=\"5832\" data-end=\"5850\">BS 1377-4:1990<\/strong> also included CBR testing, but
