What Is a Cone Penetrometer?<\/h2>\n

The Cone Penetrometer<\/strong> is used to evaluate the consistency characteristics of fine-grained soils under controlled laboratory conditions. One of its primary applications is the determination of the liquid limit<\/strong> by the fall-cone method.<\/p>\n

The liquid limit represents the moisture content at which a soil changes between the liquid and plastic states. It is one of the fundamental Atterberg limits used for soil classification and the evaluation of clayey and silty materials.<\/p>\n

ISO 17892-12:2018<\/strong> specifies methods for determining the liquid and plastic limits of soils and includes both the fall-cone method and the Casagrande method<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

How Does the Cone Penetrometer Work?<\/h2>\n

The prepared soil specimen is placed inside a suitable sample container and its surface is levelled.<\/p>\n

The penetration cone is then positioned above the specimen. When the test is initiated, the cone is released and allowed to penetrate the soil for a controlled 5-second period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The resulting penetration depth is measured digitally. Tests are repeated at different moisture contents, allowing the relationship between water content and cone penetration to be evaluated.<\/p>\n

This relationship can then be used to determine the liquid limit of the specimen.<\/p>\n

Digital 0.01 mm Penetration Measurement<\/h2>\n

The LT-S0030 incorporates a digital penetration indicator with 0.01 mm resolution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The system also includes a release button, automatic reset and penetration timer. These functions help the operator perform repeated measurements under more consistent conditions.<\/p>\n

A steel base and adjustable leveling screws support correct positioning of the instrument on the laboratory bench.<\/p>\n

30\u00b0 and 60\u00b0 Cone Options<\/h2>\n

The product family includes both 30\u00b0 and 60\u00b0 stainless steel penetration cones<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The 30\u00b0 cone configuration is used for liquid-limit testing according to the applicable fall-cone procedure. Matching cone test gauges are available for setup and checking.<\/p>\n

The 60\u00b0 cone provides an additional configuration for fall-cone applications. However, the purpose of ISO 17892-6<\/strong> must not be confused with the liquid-limit method in ISO 17892-12.<\/p>\n

ISO 17892-6:2017<\/strong> covers estimation of the undrained shear strength index<\/strong> of fine-grained soils using the fall-cone method.<\/p>\n

Moisture Content Tin Options<\/h2>\n

Two moisture-content tin sizes are listed for the system:<\/p>\n

  • LT-G0152:<\/strong> \u00d855 \u00d7 35 mm<\/li>\n
  • LT-G0151:<\/strong> \u00d875 \u00d7 45 mm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    These containers support specimen preparation and moisture-content determination during laboratory testing.<\/p>\n

    Compact Laboratory Design<\/h2>\n

    The LT-S0030 Semi-Automatic Digital Cone Penetrometer<\/strong> has external dimensions of 260 \u00d7 240 \u00d7 600 mm<\/strong> and weighs approximately 10 kg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Its compact structure makes it suitable for soil mechanics, geotechnical, university and quality-control laboratories performing routine Atterberg-limit and penetration tests.<\/p>\n

    Current Standards for Cone Penetrometer Testing<\/h2>\n

    The existing Liya Test page currently shows:<\/p>\n

    BS 1337:2, CEN ISO\/TS 17892-6, 17892-12<\/strong><\/p>\n

    but all three need attention.<\/p>\n

    The current British reference is BS 1377-2:2022<\/strong>. BSI confirms that it replaced BS 1377-2:1990 in March 2022.<\/p>\n

    For liquid-limit testing, the current international reference is ISO 17892-12:2018<\/strong>, which remains active and specifically includes the fall-cone method.<\/p>\n

    For undrained shear-strength index testing by fall cone, the current reference is ISO 17892-6:2017<\/strong>. The former ISO\/TS 17892-6:2004 has been withdrawn.<\/p>\n

    Overall, the Semi-Automatic Digital Cone Penetrometer<\/strong> combines controlled penetration timing, digital measurement and interchangeable cone configurations for precise laboratory testing of fine-grained soils.<\/p>\n
