What Is a Rolling Thin Film Oven?<\/h2>\n

The Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFOT)<\/strong> evaluates the short-term ageing behaviour of bitumen and bituminous binders. The system exposes moving films of binder to controlled heat and air. Therefore, laboratories can simulate the ageing effects that occur during asphalt mixing, transportation and laying.<\/p>\n

Short-term ageing can change binder consistency and performance. For this reason, RTFOT testing provides valuable information for asphalt production, quality control and research applications.<\/p>\n

The Liya Test LT-AS0107 operates from ambient temperature up to 200 \u00b0C<\/strong>. For standard RTFOT procedures, the system is designed to maintain a test temperature of approximately 163 \u00b0C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Precise Temperature Control<\/h2>\n

A digital PID controller continuously regulates the oven temperature. The operator can also set the required testing time according to the selected procedure.<\/p>\n

Controlled heating reduces temperature fluctuations inside the chamber. In addition, the internal circulation system distributes heated air throughout the oven. This helps ensure that all sample bottles experience similar thermal conditions.<\/p>\n

15 rpm Rotating Platform<\/h2>\n

The oven contains a vertical rotating platform driven at approximately 15 rpm<\/strong>. Glass sample bottles are positioned around this carousel during testing.<\/p>\n

Continuous rotation spreads the binder into a thin moving film inside each bottle. This increases exposure to heat and air and helps reproduce short-term ageing conditions consistently between specimens. Liya specifies a 15 rpm rotating mechanism for the LT-AS0107.<\/p>\n

Controlled Air Flow<\/h2>\n

The Rolling Thin Film Oven includes an air inlet for connection to an external compressor. A precision flowmeter allows the operator to regulate the air supply according to the applicable test procedure.<\/p>\n

Consistent air flow is essential during RTFOT testing because the binder is exposed simultaneously to heat and controlled air. The LT-G0225 8 Bar \/ 25 Litre Air Compressor<\/strong> can be supplied separately for this purpose.<\/p>\n

Durable Laboratory Construction<\/h2>\n

The internal chamber is manufactured from 304-grade stainless steel<\/strong>, while the exterior uses electrostatic powder-coated sheet steel. This construction provides durability for regular laboratory use.<\/p>\n

The front door incorporates double glazing, allowing operators to observe the sample bottles while reducing the need to open the oven during testing.<\/p>\n

The LT-AS0107 has external dimensions of 62 \u00d7 62 \u00d7 91 cm<\/strong> and weighs approximately 65 kg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Eight Glass Sample Bottles<\/h2>\n

The standard oven is supplied with eight glass sample bottles measuring 64 \u00d7 140 mm<\/strong>. These bottles rotate vertically during testing and hold the bituminous binder specimens.<\/p>\n

The repeated rotation creates a continuously renewed thin film of binder. This provides controlled exposure to both heated air and oven temperature throughout the ageing process.<\/p>\n

RTFOT Testing According to Standards<\/h2>\n

The Rolling Thin Film Oven<\/strong> supports short-term binder ageing procedures according to EN 12607-1, ASTM D2872 and AASHTO T240<\/strong>. Liya Test currently lists all three standards for the LT-AS0107.<\/p>\n

Overall, the LT-AS0107 Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFOT)<\/strong> combines precise PID temperature control, 15 rpm sample rotation<\/strong>, controlled air flow and durable stainless steel construction. Therefore, asphalt producers, road laboratories, universities and R&D centres can evaluate short-term bitumen ageing under controlled and repeatable laboratory conditions.<\/p>\n
