What Is a Los Angeles Abrasion Tester?<\/h1>\n

The Los Angeles Abrasion Tester<\/strong> is designed to determine the resistance of coarse aggregates to abrasion, impact and fragmentation. During the test, the aggregate sample and a specified abrasive ball charge are placed inside a rotating steel drum.<\/p>\n

As the drum rotates, the aggregate particles are repeatedly lifted, dropped and impacted by the steel balls. This controlled mechanical action simulates degradation that may occur during handling, construction and service.<\/p>\n

The result allows laboratories to compare the relative mechanical quality of different coarse aggregate sources.<\/p>\n

Controlled Drum and Rotation System<\/h2>\n

The machine operates at a controlled speed of 31\u201333 r.p.m.<\/strong> The drum has an internal diameter of 711 \u00b15 mm<\/strong> and an internal length of 508 \u00b15 mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

An automatic revolution counter monitors the test. The operator enters the required number of revolutions before starting the machine. When the selected value is reached, the motor stops automatically.<\/p>\n

This system helps laboratories maintain repeatable test conditions and reduces the need for continuous operator monitoring.<\/p>\n

Standard and Safety Cabinet Models<\/h2>\n

Liya Test offers two main versions. LT-A0060<\/strong> is the standard Los Angeles Abrasion Test Machine.<\/p>\n

LT-A0061<\/strong> includes a protective safety cabinet. The safety system automatically stops the machine when the cabinet door is opened. A position-locking mechanism also allows the drum opening to be fixed securely during loading and unloading.<\/p>\n

Abrasive Ball Set Options<\/h2>\n

The abrasive charge depends on the applied standard and aggregate grading.<\/p>\n

For ASTM, UNI and CNR applications, LT-A0062<\/strong> contains 12 abrasive balls<\/strong>. The LT-A0063 EN Ball Set<\/strong> contains 11 balls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Correct ball selection is important because the total abrasive charge directly affects the mechanical action applied to the aggregate during the test.<\/p>\n

How Is the Los Angeles Test Performed?<\/h2>\n

First, the operator prepares the coarse aggregate sample according to the relevant grading requirements. The sample and specified steel ball charge are then placed inside the drum.<\/p>\n

The cover is secured and the required number of revolutions is entered. After the test, the material is removed, sieved and weighed.<\/p>\n

The percentage mass loss represents the aggregate’s resistance to degradation. Lower loss generally indicates stronger resistance under the specified test conditions.<\/p>\n

EN 1097-2 and ASTM Test Methods<\/h2>\n

EN 1097-2:2020<\/strong> defines the Los Angeles test as the reference method for determining the resistance of coarse aggregates to fragmentation. BSI currently lists this edition as current and under review.<\/p>\n

ASTM C131\/C131M-20<\/strong> covers smaller coarse aggregate sizes and is currently active. ASTM C535-16(2024)<\/strong> covers large-size coarse aggregates and is also active.<\/p>\n

As a result, the Los Angeles Abrasion Tester<\/strong> provides aggregate laboratories with a durable and repeatable system for mechanical resistance testing.<\/p>\n
