What Is a Nordic Abrasion Machine?<\/h1>\n

The Nordic Abrasion Machine<\/strong> is used to determine the resistance of coarse aggregates to wear caused by the abrasive action of studded tyres<\/strong>. The method is particularly relevant for aggregates intended for road surface applications where repeated tyre contact can produce significant wear.<\/p>\n

During the test, the aggregate sample is placed inside a rotating drum together with water and steel abrasive balls. The combined action of rotation, water and steel balls produces a controlled abrasion effect on the aggregate particles.<\/p>\n

EN 1097-9:2014<\/strong> defines the Nordic test as the reference method for determining the resistance of coarse aggregates to wear caused by studded tyres. The standard applies primarily to the 11.2\u201316.0 mm size fraction<\/strong>. An alternative 8\u201311.2 mm fraction<\/strong> is also described for specific applications.<\/p>\n

Controlled Stainless Steel Drum<\/h2>\n

The machine incorporates a rolled stainless steel drum with an internal diameter of 206.5 mm<\/strong>, an internal length of 335 mm<\/strong> and a wall thickness of 6 mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The drum rotates at 90 \u00b13 r.p.m.<\/strong> Three internal ribs help distribute the aggregate and abrasive balls uniformly during rotation. This arrangement supports consistent abrasion conditions throughout the test.<\/p>\n

How Is the Nordic Abrasion Test Performed?<\/h2>\n

First, the operator prepares the aggregate sample according to the required particle-size fraction. The sample is then placed inside the drum together with the specified quantity of water and abrasive steel balls.<\/p>\n

After the drum is securely closed, the required number of revolutions is selected and the test is started. The aggregate particles continuously interact with the steel balls, water and internal drum surfaces.<\/p>\n

When the specified number of revolutions has been completed, the sample is removed. The material is then washed, sieved and dried according to the test procedure. The mass loss is calculated and reported as the Nordic abrasion value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Abrasion Resistance of Road Aggregates<\/h2>\n

A lower abrasion loss generally indicates stronger resistance to wear under the specified test conditions. This information helps laboratories compare aggregate sources intended for demanding pavement applications.<\/p>\n

However, the Nordic abrasion result should be evaluated together with other aggregate properties such as fragmentation resistance, polishing resistance, particle shape and water absorption.<\/p>\n

EN 1097-9 Nordic Test<\/h2>\n

BS EN 1097-9:2014<\/strong> is currently listed by BSI as current and under review<\/strong>. It specifically covers resistance to wear caused by studded tyres using the Nordic test.<\/p>\n
