What Is a Drying Shrinkage Test Set?<\/h1>\n

The Drying Shrinkage Test<\/strong> determines the effect of aggregates on the dimensional change of concrete during drying. Concrete prism specimens are prepared under controlled conditions and their length changes are measured at specified stages.<\/p>\n

Aggregate type can significantly influence concrete shrinkage. Therefore, this method allows laboratories to compare different aggregate sources under consistent test conditions. EN 1367-4:2008<\/strong> defines the reference method for determining the influence of aggregates on the drying shrinkage of concrete. The standard is based primarily on concrete produced with aggregates having a maximum size of 20 mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Analog and Digital Measurement Options<\/h2>\n

L\u0130YA Test offers two configurations.<\/p>\n

The LT-A0048\/AS Analog Shrinkage Test Set<\/strong> uses an analog dial indicator. The analog indicator provides a 10 mm measuring range<\/strong> with 0.01 mm resolution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The LT-A0048\/DS Digital Shrinkage Test Set<\/strong> uses a digital indicator with a 12.7 mm measuring range<\/strong> and 0.001 mm resolution<\/strong>. This option is suitable when finer dimensional changes need to be monitored.<\/p>\n

Both systems use the same basic specimen preparation and length comparison arrangement.<\/p>\n

Three-Gang 50 \u00d7 50 \u00d7 200 mm Mould<\/h2>\n

The set includes a three-gang mould for 50 \u00d7 50 \u00d7 200 mm prism specimens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Producing three specimens from the same concrete batch makes it easier to compare results obtained under equivalent conditions. Steel inserts are positioned at the specimen ends to create repeatable reference points for subsequent measurements.<\/p>\n

After casting and the required initial conditioning, the specimens can be removed from the mould and transferred to the specified curing and drying conditions.<\/p>\n

Length Comparator and Reference Rod<\/h2>\n

The Length Comparator<\/strong> holds the specimen in a consistent position during measurement. The operator places each prism between the measuring contacts and records the indicator reading.<\/p>\n

A 205 mm reference rod<\/strong> is used to check the comparator before a measurement series. This reference helps establish a consistent starting point and reduces errors caused by changes in the measuring system.<\/p>\n

The LT-A0048 Length Comparator has overall dimensions of 18 \u00d7 18 \u00d7 45 cm<\/strong> and weighs approximately 6 kg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

How Is Drying Shrinkage Measured?<\/h2>\n

First, concrete is prepared using the aggregate to be evaluated. The mixture is placed into the three-gang mould and compacted according to the applicable procedure.<\/p>\n

After the required curing stage, an initial length reading is taken.<\/p>\n

The specimens are then stored under the drying conditions defined by the relevant method. Measurements are repeated at the required intervals.<\/p>\n

The difference between the initial and subsequent readings represents the dimensional change of the specimen. Laboratories use these measurements to calculate and compare the drying shrinkage<\/strong> associated with different aggregates.<\/p>\n

Why Is Aggregate Shrinkage Important?<\/h2>\n

Aggregates generally restrain the shrinkage of the cement paste. However, different aggregate types can produce substantially different concrete shrinkage behaviour.<\/p>\n

Excessive dimensional change can contribute to cracking and serviceability problems in concrete elements. For this reason, understanding the influence of an aggregate source is valuable when evaluating materials for structural concrete.<\/p>\n

EN 1367-4 Drying Shrinkage Testing<\/h2>\n

EN 1367-4:2008<\/strong> remains the current European reference method for determining the effect of aggregates on the drying shrinkage of concrete. The method is intended primarily for type testing and cases of dispute, although other procedures may be used for production control when a suitable relationship with the reference method has been established.<\/p>\n

The Drying Shrinkage Test Set<\/strong> combines controlled specimen preparation, accurate length measurement and analog or digital indicator options. As a result, laboratories can monitor dimensional changes in concrete specimens under repeatable test conditions.<\/p>\n
