What Is a Sulphate Soundness Test?<\/h1>\n

The Sulphate Soundness Test<\/strong> provides a preliminary evaluation of how aggregates may behave when exposed to repeated weathering effects. The method repeatedly immerses aggregate samples in saturated magnesium sulphate or sodium sulphate solution<\/strong>, followed by drying.<\/p>\n

Salt enters permeable pores within the aggregate. During the repeated wetting and drying cycle, crystal formation creates internal expansive stresses. This accelerated laboratory procedure helps compare the soundness of different aggregate sources.<\/p>\n

ASTM describes the procedure as an estimate of aggregate soundness under weathering action rather than a direct simulation of field service life.<\/p>\n

Magnesium Sulphate and Sodium Sulphate Options<\/h2>\n

L\u0130YA Test offers two primary configurations.<\/p>\n

LT-A0080 Magnesium Sulphate Test Set<\/strong> is intended for magnesium sulphate testing, while LT-A0081 Sodium Sulphate Test Set<\/strong> supports the sodium sulphate procedure.<\/p>\n

The two salts should not be treated as interchangeable when comparing numerical results. ASTM specifically notes that results obtained with magnesium sulphate and sodium sulphate can differ considerably. Magnesium sulphate generally produces the more severe test action.<\/p>\n

Controlled Sulphate Test Water Bath<\/h2>\n

The LT-A0080\/1 Magnesium \/ Sodium Sulphate Test Water Bath<\/strong> keeps the test solution at the required temperature.<\/p>\n

A microprocessor-controlled sensor automatically regulates the bath. The operator monitors the actual solution temperature on a digital display with 0.1 \u00b0C resolution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For sulphate testing, Liya specifies a controlled condition of approximately 20 \u00b12 \u00b0C<\/strong>. Maintaining stable temperature helps laboratories create comparable conditions between individual immersion cycles.<\/p>\n

General-Purpose Water Bath Function<\/h2>\n

The unit can also operate as a general-purpose laboratory water bath.<\/p>\n

When the immersion container is removed, the operator can set temperatures between 15 \u00b0C and 60 \u00b0C<\/strong>. This feature allows the same equipment to support additional temperature-controlled laboratory applications.<\/p>\n

The water bath is supplied with its immersion container and lid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

How Is the Sulphate Soundness Test Performed?<\/h2>\n

First, the aggregate sample is prepared and separated into the required particle-size fractions.<\/p>\n

The selected sulphate solution is prepared at the concentration required by the applicable test standard. The aggregate is then immersed in the solution for the specified period.<\/p>\n

After immersion, the specimen is removed and dried in an oven.<\/p>\n

The laboratory repeats this immersion and drying process for the required number of cycles. After the final cycle, the sample is washed to remove remaining salts, dried and sieved.<\/p>\n

Material loss is then calculated for the relevant size fractions.<\/p>\n

The result allows different aggregates to be compared according to their resistance to the accelerated sulphate weathering procedure.<\/p>\n

EN 1367-2 Magnesium Sulphate Testing<\/h2>\n

EN 1367-2:2009<\/strong> describes the reference method for determining the behaviour of aggregates exposed to repeated immersion in magnesium sulphate solution followed by oven drying. BSI currently lists the standard as current and under review<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The method is particularly relevant to aggregate durability and thermal\/weathering performance assessment.<\/p>\n

ASTM C88\/C88M Soundness Testing<\/h2>\n

The current active ASTM edition is ASTM C88\/C88M-24<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

ASTM permits either sodium sulfate or magnesium sulfate<\/strong> and describes the test as a preliminary estimate of aggregate soundness for concrete and other applications. The standard also cautions that the result should not normally be used as the sole basis for rejecting an aggregate because the precision of the method is limited.<\/p>\n

Hydrometers and Additional Accessories<\/h2>\n

Different hydrometers are available according to the selected test procedure.<\/p>\n

LT-G0674<\/strong> covers the 1100\u20131200 g\/ml<\/strong> range and is listed by Liya for ASTM-related applications.<\/p>\n

LT-G0675<\/strong> covers 1200\u20131300 g\/ml<\/strong> and is listed for EN\/ASTM applications.<\/p>\n

Wire baskets and basket containers are also selected according to aggregate size and whether magnesium or sodium sulphate is being used.<\/p>\n

The Sulphate Soundness Test<\/strong> system therefore combines controlled temperature, different salt options and modular accessories in one laboratory testing family. It allows laboratories to compare aggregate durability under repeatable accelerated weathering conditions.<\/p>\n
