What Are Wire Baskets?<\/h1>\n

Wire Baskets<\/strong> are used to hold aggregate samples during hydrostatic weighing for relative density and water absorption testing. The basket keeps the aggregate securely contained while allowing water to move freely through the mesh.<\/p>\n

Hydrostatic weighing compares the mass of an aggregate sample in air with its apparent mass while submerged in water. Laboratories can use these values to determine density-related properties and water absorption. These results provide important information for concrete, asphalt and aggregate quality-control applications.<\/p>\n

Different Mesh Opening Options<\/h2>\n

L\u0130YA Test offers a wide range of Wire Baskets for different sample sizes and testing requirements.<\/p>\n

Available mesh openings range from 0.150 mm to 9.5 mm<\/strong>. Intermediate options include 0.600, 1.18, 1.70, 2.00, 3.35 and 4.00 mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Different basket dimensions are also available. This allows the operator to select a model according to the aggregate particle size, sample quantity and applicable test method.<\/p>\n

The correct mesh opening is important because the basket must retain the aggregate particles without unnecessarily restricting water circulation.<\/p>\n

How Is Hydrostatic Weighing Performed?<\/h2>\n

First, the operator prepares the aggregate sample according to the required test procedure. The sample is then placed inside the appropriate Wire Basket<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The basket is connected to a suitable balance equipped for under-balance weighing. It is then completely submerged in water.<\/p>\n

The basket should not touch the bottom or sides of the water tank. The operator must also remove visible air bubbles from the aggregate particles and wire mesh.<\/p>\n

Once the balance reading becomes stable, the submerged mass is recorded. The result can then be used together with other required measurements to calculate the relevant aggregate properties.<\/p>\n

Stainless Steel Construction<\/h2>\n

The baskets are manufactured from stainless steel wire mesh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This construction provides resistance to prolonged contact with water and supports repeated laboratory use. The open mesh design also makes the baskets easy to rinse after testing.<\/p>\n

Regular cleaning is important because trapped aggregate particles can block mesh openings and affect subsequent measurements.<\/p>\n

The operator should also protect the basket against impact or deformation. Changes in basket geometry or mesh condition can make sample handling more difficult.<\/p>\n

Aggregate Density and Water Absorption Testing<\/h2>\n

ASTM C127<\/strong> and AASHTO T 85<\/strong> describe methods for determining the relative density and absorption of coarse aggregate.<\/p>\n

BS 812-2<\/strong> also includes procedures associated with aggregate density testing using submerged weighing equipment.<\/p>\n

For applicable aggregate fractions, current EN 1097-6<\/strong> methods also use wire-basket arrangements for particle density and water absorption determination.<\/p>\n
